The Division of Public Partnerships (PPD) works to strengthen UNICEF's position as a partner of choice for children's rights among governments and public actors around the world. The division is doing this by connecting UNICEF’s positioning of children in intergovernmental and multilateral fora and negotiations to the engagement with governments and public institutions (including IFIs) as resource, policy and program partners. A key premise for PPD is that the engagement with countries should be based on multiple levels of partnerships, including around resource mobilization and policy advocacy.

How can you make a difference?

The intern would support the overall work of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) team in charge of issues related to the Middle East as well as related humanitarian and development issues in the region.

Expected competencies include proven ability to synthesize information and communicate it simply and effectively: excellent writing and research skills; strong analytical skills; excellent written and oral communication skills.

A good understanding of the United Nations and multilateral organizations is an asset.

Duties and responsibilities:

  1. Geographical focus:
  • Support the team in strengthening partnership work related to the MENA region;
  • Update on the social and economic trends of the changing environment and update the country profiles of MENA programme countries;
  • Monitor changes in social-political dynamics or upcoming major events in the region and conduct geopolitical analysis of the trends that might impact UNICEF’s funding and advocacy efforts.
  • Keep abreast of the UNICEF initiatives including publications released.
  • Provide creative and innovative views on concept papers, strategies etc.
  1. UN and intergovernmental:
  • Support the preparation of e summary reports of key inter-agency and intergovernmental meetings that are related to the region and its countries.
  • Support the work of the UNICEF Executive Board and United Nations General Assembly meetings
  1. Communication:
  • Support in developing visualization of data, and graphics, for funding trends for Gulf donors utilizing existing platforms led by the Systems Analytics Planning Operations (SAPO) team.
  • Support in designing of power-point and other presentation formats as required

    Key deliverables:

  • Provide support to the funding analysis especially in developing visualization of data, and graphics, for funding trends for Gulf donors.

  • Assist in research for accurate and evidence-based data and information for briefing notes for OED.
  • Support in keeping the donor profiles updated.
  • Support in designing of power-point and other presentation formats as required.

    To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Qualifications & Skills Required:

    • Education: Recent University degree in international relations, Middle Eastern studies, social sciences, law or related field. Study/experience in human rights and related work would be an asset.
    • Fluency in English required. Knowledge of another UN language an asset.
    • Ability to operate in a diplomatic environment, using tact and judgement.
    • Ability to work in an international and multicultural environment. Competencies required: commitment, embracing diversity, integrity, teamwork, and drive for results; communication, judgment, planning, setting standards and monitoring work, analytical and conceptual thinking.
    • Knowledge of office computer systems (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet research.
    • Experience in negotiation and advocacy an asset.
  • Payment:

    A stipend will be given during the duration.

    There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship.

    Visa requirements

    If the intern is working remotely from a different country, there is no visa requirement.

    If the intern is working remotely within the US, the intern is required to be on a G-4 visa if they do not hold one of the following statuses:

    • F1 visa holders who also have a Curricular Practical Training (CPT);

    • US permanent residents (green card holders); or,

    • US Citizens

    Individuals are personally responsible for obtaining any required visa, covering the entire period of their internship. If necessary, UNICEF will support the process by providing relevant documents such as the proof of internship.
