Background Information - Afghanistan

Afghanistan

UNOPS strategy for Afghanistan is aimed at providing maximum support to the Government and people of Afghanistan though the delivery of projects and services in line with the government’s own priorities. The UNOPS Afghanistan Operation Center (AFOC) has been established as an organizational mechanism to deliver a range of projects for which UNOPS has been designated as the implementation agency. At present, UNOPS AFOC is implementing a number of projects in a range of sectors including infrastructure (roads and schools) development, capacity building to various ministries, and environmental protection, among others, on behalf of the Government of Afghanistan and the donor community.

The functional objective of UNOPS AFOC is to deliver projects in an efficient and effective manner, to achieve the development outcomes sought by the Government of Afghanistan and the donor community, where capacity building is always considered and encouraged. The aim of UNOPS AFOC is to provide implementation services to the Government of Afghanistan, the donor community and partner agencies in the reconstruction and development of the country. In doing so, UNOPS aims to exceed client expectations in the delivery of quality services throughout the country.

Background Information - Job-specific

We are currently looking for a recent graduate Afghan national with a strong sense of professional and social commitment to join the Kabul Security Infrastructure Project (KSIP) team as an Intern. In the Project context, under the overall guidance and direction of the Project Manager (PM) and the Project Support Officer (PSO), the intern will contribute to providing efficient financial, administrative, HR and logistical support services to the project. The Intern will be engaged in activities such as (but not limited to) the following:

  • Assist in providing support to the overall aspects of the project operations related to finance, human resources, procurement and logistics, among others.
  • Assist in raising requisitions for procurement, and facilitate requests for issuance of contracts and/or amendments on documents.
  • Assist in liaising with UNOPS support service offices for project-related administrative and operational matters such as payments, contract management, recruitment of personnel, procurement of goods and services and assets management.
  • Assist in ensuring all business processes are backed up by required supporting documents and maintain an effective records system.
  • Performs other related duties as required within its area of expertise.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

I. Education

  • Applicants must be (or have been) completing a degree in Business Administration, Commerce, Finance, Management, Economics, Accounting, Public Administration or a relevant field within no more than the last 3 years (before application) from a recognized University.

II. Certification

  • Holding any other professional certificate in a relevant field (such as ACCA) would be an asset.

III. Experience

  • No specific experience is required for this position.
  • Proficiency in the usage of computers and Google apps as well as web-based management systems would be an advantage.

IV. Language Requirements

  • Fluency in English – both written and oral is required
  • Fluency in Dari and/or Pashtu – written and oral is required

Contract type: Internship Contract level: N/A Contract duration: 6 months This internship is not designed to lead to a staff position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.
