Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the Secretariat Department responsible for strengthening international human rights mechanisms; enhancing equality and countering discrimination; combating impunity and strengthening accountability and the rule of law; integrating human rights in development and in the economic sphere; widening the democratic space; and early warning and protection of human rights in situations of conflict, violence and insecurity. The intern, under the general guidance of a primary supervisor, will be assigned to the Innovation and Analytics Hub in the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), in Geneva. The Hub is responsible for leading the office-wide digital transformation strategy to enhance organization effectiveness, focusing on how data and information is managed across the organization, streamlining existing processes and technologies to support systematic data collection and analysis, and bolster both strategic and operational decision-making. The intern based in the Hub will support OHCHR in fulfilling its mission. Duties will include but are not limited to: • Support with validating, processing, and organizing datasets to fulfill ad-hoc analysis and reporting needs, ensuring data-driven insights bolster OHCHR’s initiatives • Support analytics on issues relating to the OHCHR, including cross-cutting needs, priorities, resources, risks and performance • Assist in the development of dashboards and visualizations derived from multiple data sources using state-of the-art tools to enable insight and decision-making at various levels • Support with identifying and addressing data gaps in regions with limited primary data availability by leveraging secondary sources, thus reinforcing the evidence base for human rights and other domain-specific analyses • Support with analyzing decisions from risk prevention forums and producing reports to guide activities related to UN Integration in fragile and crisis settings • Support the maintenance and optimization of data pipelines feeding into OHCHR's BI platforms, ensuring the delivery of reliable data for strategic decision-making • Help develop dataflows that integrate information from diverse sources, including UN entities, agencies, academic institutions, and external providers, consolidating this data into central databases for comprehensive analysis • Support the development of data models, including performance measures, to enable scorecard analysis • Work with analytical techniques such as sentiment analysis, predictive analysis or social media monitoring • Contribute to AI integration within OHCHR, enhancing data processing and analytical capabilities through advanced technology • Aid in ensuring the durability and efficiency of cloud-based data pipelines, facilitating secure and effective data management • Support the automation and streamlining of workflows from data collection to reporting, leveraging serverless tools and cloud systems to increase operational efficiency • Help in the development and customization of web applications with data-driven and geospatial functionalities, tailored to OHCHR's specific needs • Contribute to the routine upkeep and enhancement of the data catalogue, ensuring the data supports all of OHCHR's reporting and analytical platforms effectively

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for the United Nations Secretariat internship programme, applicants must, at the time of submission, be a graduate or enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master's degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or, be a graduate or enrolled in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (i.e. Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree) preferably in the area of Technology, Statistics, Data Science, Data Engineering, Data Visualization, Analytics, Information Management, Computer Science, Finance or related fields OR have graduated with a university degree as defined above AND, if selected, must commence the internship on the date specified in the Acceptance letter. Experience with MS Power BI, Tableau or other similar self-service analytics toolsets. Experience with relational databases such as SQL Server or other databases. Experience with geo-spatial analysis and geographic information systems such as ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS, Leaflet, Carto or Open Street Map. Experience with data harvesting systems, including Azure Functions, MQuery, and Python Scripts. Experience in applying NLP techniques, developing machine learning models, refining time-series analyses, focusing on trend identification and forecasting. Experience conducting research and applying statistical methods.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in English is required (both oral and written). Knowledge of another United Nations official language would be an advantage (i.e. French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).
