UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. This assignment is located in the UNEP’s Corporate Services Division (CSD), at the Nairobi duty station. The Enterprise Solutions Section in CSD is mandated to enable efficient programme delivery through the use of ICT and emerging technology stand-ards, solution and overall business process automation supporting the organization’s pro-gramme of work. It undertakes a wide range of services, activities and projects. It works closely with clients throughout the project life cycle to tailor the services to their needs ensur-ing that the solution meets the required objectives from a specification, resource and time perspective. The Section is currently involved in the strategy, planning and implementation of the UNEP Digital Transformation Sub-programme.

Under the direct supervision of an Officer in the Section and in close engagement with the UNEP Digital Transformation team, the Youth National Volunteer will be part of a team to implement the UNEP Digital Transformation Sub-programme. The specific tasks of the International Volunteer include the following:

  • Participate in preparing user requirements and other technical specifications of the various phased releases of the UNEP Digital Transformation Sub-programme deliverables.
  • Participate in specifying data requirements and data cleaning / processing required for the UNEP Digital Transformation Sub-programme deliverables.
  • Assist in the analysis, design, development and deployment of the UNEP Digital Transformation Sub-programme deliverables, in particular the Digital Enterprise Architecture, Data Warehouse, and Online Service Desks.
  • Participate in drafting and maintaining project plans, schedules, and budgets.
  • Assist in identifying appropriate human and technical resources to complete the project.
  • Prepare, update and maintain systems documentation and related technical / procedural manuals.
  • Assist in procurement aspects, including conducting needs assessments and benchmarks, preparing technical specifications and evaluation criteria.
  • Assist in the development of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with service providers as required.
  • Draft training materials and conducts training sessions and demonstrations of systems for users.
  • Provide guidance and coordinate junior members of the team.
  • Perform ad hoc duties as required.

Results/Expected Output: • High participation in the analysis, design, development and deployment of the UNEP Digital Transformation Sub-programme deliverables, in particular the Digital Enterprise Architecture, Data Warehouse, and Online Service Desks. • Pieces or scripts of software code and/or implementation of software tools related with the UNEP Digital Transformation Sub-programme deliverables. • Consolidated and cleansed data for use of the UNEP Digital Transformation Sub-programme deliverables. • Various types of documents related to the UNEP Digital Transformation Sub-programme deliverables, such as research reports, user requirements, technical specifications, project plan, SLAs, and training / systems outreach material are produced timely and with high quality results.

Communication professionalism team work technological awareness

in application software systems analysis, design and development; and data management. Up to 3 years of work experience at international level is preffered. Skills: • High proficiency in at least four of the following: PHP, Python, Jupiter Notebook, Ja-vaScript, SQL databases, data science, deep learning algorithms, Power BI, Jira, and Confluence. • Demonstrated writing and speaking skills in English. • Experience working in teams, including coordination of junior members, and in engaging with clients. Working with multi-cultural teams would be an advantage. • Experience in developing Jira – based solutions would be an advantage.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighbouring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Govern-ment; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Air-port and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up country destina-tions. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
