Org. Setting and Reporting This position is in the Office of the Director, Division of Specialized Operational Support (DSOS) in the United Nations Department of Safety and Security. DSOS is responsible for providing specialized support and assistance to other DSS divisions, services and units and to personnel in the field, including information management and technology services. The incumbent reports to the Deputy Director or her/his designate.

Responsibilities Responsibilities: Within delegated authority, the Information Systems Assistant will be responsible for any or all of the following duties: •Acts as focal point for receipt and processing of user requests. •Provides basic technical support on relevant hardware and software systems applications in assigned area. •Installs application systems software and hardware according to specifications. •Assist in performing software distribution updates, scripting, testing and support. Performs research into new versions of centrally supported software and performs beta testing, production rollout and post production support. •Performs 2nd level desktop troubleshooting in conjunction with the Help Desk. •Maintains and updates files (electronic and paper) and internal databases. •Assists in routine installation, configuration, testing and deployment of server hardware and software, including Operating Systems, Electronic mail, Database systems, Internet Web software, firewall, Domain Name Server (DNS), DHCP, mail relay, and various security software. •Assists in responding to requests from user offices and assists in deploying/configuring systems. •Implements backups. •Collects various statistics on the performance and reliability of systems, and produce pertinent reports. •Receives and logs problem calls or service requests in the automated tracking system with minimum delay. •Attempts to resolve as many problem calls or service requests on initial contact. •Performs tasks related to scheduled service requests, including equipment replacement, equipment installation/de-installation, software installation. •Diagnoses and resolves any hardware, software, or connectivity problem with minimum delay. •Provides basic training to end-users on the use of standard systems. •Logs all actions in the automated tracking system, including site survey information, steps taken to resolve problem or to complete task, problems encountered, current status, etc. •Detects problem patterns and recommend solutions. •Keeps abreast of developments in technology both in the UN and in the industry in general. •Performs hardware and software configuration in accordance with established procedure. •Recommends acquisition of hardware, software, devices, tools, etc. to facilitate work. •Performs filing and record-keeping tasks for the unit. •Provides basic support in the planning, specification, design, development, implementation and maintenance of customized application software systems; works with senior IT staff on the definition and specification of requirements; builds, tests and modifies prototype application software based on detailed instructions; installs and maintains software systems. •Supports senior staff in the creation and maintenance of application software; assists in the preparation of technical and user documentation, as well as in the production of training materials. •Provides support on software development matters, including security, data integrity and recovery; assists with needs assessment for new systems (including modifications to existing systems); performs ongoing reviews with users and developers and responds to requirements; requests, implements, provides operational support and maintains various applications. •Maintains regular contact with users and technical staff in user offices and provides support as required. •Conducts research on new technologies as requested; keeps abreast of developments in the field; assists in testing and evaluating new products and technologies. •Performs other related duties as required.

Competencies •Professionalism: Knowledge of relevant programming language(s) and basic programming skills. Knowledge of information technology and applications, including computer system networks. Knowledge of business intelligence software and technology, cloud applications, and other technology relevant to the mandate of UNDSS. Good technical skills, ability to participate in development and maintenance of applications, provide user support. Ability to respond to changing requirements and assignments, ability to apply good judgment in the context of assignments given. Education High school diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience A minimum of five (5) years experience in information systems analysis and programming, systems administration and maintenance, software development, technical writing or related area is required.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

  • This position is funded through General Temporary Assistance funding and is available for a period of six months with possibility of extension. Extension of the appointment is subject to the extension of the mandate and/or the availability of the funds. Due to the temporary nature of the position, if the selected candidate is an internal staff member of the UN Secretariat, the selection will be recorded as a temporary assignment.

  • This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. All staff in the General Service and related categories shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of each office, irrespective of their nationality and of the length of time they may have been in the country. A staff member subject to local recruitment shall not be eligible for the allowances or benefits exclusively applicable to international recruitment.

  • Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat. Applicants who have not passed the GGST at the time of application may be invited for the test after submitting an application. Having passed the Administrative Support Assessment Test in English at the United Nations headquarters, Economic Commission for Africa, Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, United Nations Office at Geneva, United Nations Office at Vienna, International criminal tribunal for Rwanda or International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia may be accepted in lieu of the GGST.

  • A current staff member who holds a fixed-term, permanent or continuing appointment may apply for temporary positions no more than one level above his or her current grade. However, a current staff member who holds an appointment at the G-6 or G-7 level may also apply to temporary positions in the Professional category up to and including the P-3 level, subject to meeting all eligibility and other requirements for the position.

  • Upon separation from service, including, but not limited to, expiration or termination of, or resignation from, a fixed-term, continuing or permanent appointment, a former staff member will be ineligible for re-employment on the basis of a temporary appointment for a period of 31 days following the separation. In the case of separation from service on retirement, a former staff member will be ineligible for re-employment for a period of three months following the separation. This equally applies, mutatis mutandis, with respect to a former or current staff member who has held or holds an appointment in another entity applying the United Nations Staff Regulations and Rules and who applies for a temporary position with the Secretariat.

  • Subject to the funding source of the position, this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.

  • While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post. An external candidate selected for this position is bound by the prevailing condition of the staff selection system under ST/AI/2010/3, as recruited in the Professional and above categories on a temporary appointment, and placed on a position authorized for one year or longer may not apply for or be reappointed to his/her current position within six months of the end of his/her current service. This provision does not apply to staff members holding temporary appointments and placed on positions authorized for one year or more in duty stations authorized for peacekeeping operations or special political missions.
