Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Language Support Unit, Multilingual Technology Section, Languages Service, Division of Conference Management, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management, Geneva. The incumbent reports to the Chief of Unit.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Information Systems Assistant will be responsible for the following duties: - Participates in the business analysis, development, programming, testing, debugging, maintenance and implementation of new application systems releases, modules and functionalities. - Develops, tests and implements simple computer application systems and programs using UN established standards for IT technologies, programming languages and tools. - Serves as team member in the planning, specification, design, development, implementation and support of computer application systems; independently liaises with users to define and specify requirements. - Installs language specific computer application systems software and hardware according to specifications; monitors computer applications systems using appropriate monitoring tools and produces monitoring reports. - Prepares technical and user documentation for deployed computer application systems, as well as training materials and conducts technical presentations. - Maintains functional specifications for computer application systems, programs and procedures developed and/or modified. - Provides support for deployed language specific computer application systems including Enterprise applications, Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, machine translation, translation memory, documentation database and systems, version management, data recovery and deployment to users’ offices; performs ongoing reviews with users and developers and responds to users requests. - Drafts correspondence and communications, including work plan revisions and other related issues, as well as prepares unit contributions for a variety of periodic reports. - Serves as focal point for coordination, monitoring and expedition of computer application systems development projects, involving extensive liaison with Regional Technology Centre (RTC) and Enterprise to initiate requests; prepares standard terms of reference; processes and follows-up on administrative actions and resolves issues related to project implementation, e.g. organization of and participation in training, procurement of equipment and services, etc. - Keeps abreast of developments in the field; performs benchmarking and proposes new acquisitions. - Provides ongoing and specialized training to end-users on standard and language specific systems, including word processing techniques, CAT tools and other software and databases, including but not limited to machine translation systems. - Provides guidance to new/junior staff. - Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of PHP programming, .NET, VBA, MS Word Macros and relevant programming languages. Knowledge of relevant programming language(s) and ability to use programming skills to develop information systems. Knowledge of system development workflow and document flow processes, ability to conduct research and gather information from a wide variety of standard and non-standard sources. Ability to respond to changing requirements and assignments, ability to apply good judgment in the context of assignments given. Education High school diploma or equivalent.

Job - Specific Qualification Having passed the International Computer Drivers License (ICDL) or the European Computer Driver's License (ECDL) is desirable.

Work Experience At least seven (7) years of experience in information systems analysis and programming, systems administration and maintenance, software development, technical writing or related area is required.

Proven experience as an advance MS Word user in building Macros and VBAs (Visual Basic for Application) for the creation and design of online/interactive models in MS Office is desirable.

Experience with PHP programming, .NET, web application development, content management systems, Drupal, HTML 5 Java Script and CSS is desirable.

Experience with documents processing systems, Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, as well as experience in technical writing and providing training is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English or French is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice - This position is temporarily available for three (3) months, with a possibility of extension. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

  • Recruitment for this position is done on a local basis, whether or not the candidate is a resident of the duty station.

  • Candidates should have no expectation of any fixed-term appointment possibility after the end of this temporary assignment.

  • If the selected candidate is an internal staff member from the UN Secretariat, the selection will be recorded as a temporary assignment.

  • Subsequent to the initial temporary appointment, new and successive temporary appointments may be granted for service in the same office or in a different office any number of times, for any duration, provided that the length of service does not exceed the period of 364 calendar days.

  • Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat. Applicants who have not passed the GGST at the time of application may be invited for the test after submitting an application.
