How can you make a difference?

Under the supervision of the Education Sector & CP AoR Coordinators, and technical support of the Information Management Specialist in Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (PM&E) Section, the role of the Information Management Officer (IMO) is to support the sector, and sector lead agency, towards a timely response through the provision of evidence based strategic and operational information as per IASC Guidance on Responsibilities of Cluster/Sector Leads and OCHA for Information Management. The IMO facilitates partner coordination and information sharing to support evidence based decision-making and accountability, within the sector.

Post is Damascus-based with frequent travel within governorates and different hubs. Work implies frequent interaction with UNICEF staff with particular sector focal points/ double hatted person at all levels within UNICEF Syria Country Office. In addition, the post should connect and maintain good working relation with the humanitarian community which include sector partners particularly UN agencies, Government officials, national and international NGOs involved in humanitarian operations across Syria. S/he also should maintain technical and operational level contact and consultation with WoS Education Sector and CP AOR Coordinators/Focal points/IM Specialist to harmonize and mainstream management and flow of information to the concerned partners.

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

The below tasks are expected to be carried out but not limited:

  • Develop, maintain and strengthen sector databases (e.g. track partner activity, coordinate monthly reporting from partners, monitor emergency response etc.).
  • Collect Education and Child Protection - relevant data, and collate, store, filter, analyze and disseminate data for sector needs assessment and decision-making.
  • Provide summaries of sector progress against key results & indicators on a monthly basis and as required including program activities and supplies.
  • Work closely with and provide capacity development support to Sector/AoR partners, including relevant government ministries at national and governorate levels.
  • Coordinate closely with Whole of Syria IM focal points in other hubs, as well as UNICEF PM&E Section as necessary.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Completion of bachelor university degree in Computer Science, Demography, Geography, Statistics, Economics or a related technical field. Higher academic degree is an advantage.
  • Minimum one year of relevant professional experience in a similar role for information management. Additional training and certification on information management and information technology will be considered as an asset.
  • Proven statistical, analytical and technical skills including database management and data analysis, high level of proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc.), ability to maintain basic websites, ability to produce data summaries and visualizations, GIS knowledge and practical experience on qualitative surveys an advantage;
  • Fluency in English and Arabic (verbal and written) is essential.
  • Willingness and ability to work in difficult environments, in often stressful time-critical situations;
  • Cultural and Gender awareness and sensitivity;
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Cluster System an advantage;
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles & practices related to Education and Child Protection/Protection, in humanitarian response is as an advantage.

UNICEF appointments are subject to medical clearance. Appointments may also be subject to inoculation (vaccination) requirements, including against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid).
