Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 22 years old. Applicants must be nationals of or legal residents in the country of assignment.

Description of task

The UN Volunteer will work in the UNDP Ethiopia Country Office, in support of regional programming efforts across the CO’s programme portfolios, with a focus on early recovery and social cohesion, in the key functions listed below. S(he) will also work closely with the UNDP teams; UN agencies; and the UNDP Crisis Bureau.

Data Capture, Management and Analysis:

  • Support with data coordination, especially as it relates to sectoral data (eg. Who does What Where and When (4W) data, and assessment data) for recovery programmes;
  • Support in developing data collection tools, databases and statistical reports and operational maps.
  • Build/ maintain regular contacts with information management partners to collect operational data and to ensure it meets relevant standards and is available for exchange;
  • Design, develop and manage databases, spreadsheets, and other data sources;
  • Consolidate operational information on a regular schedule to support analysis, including compiling and updating available GIS data (GPS tracking, data from other agencies, etc.);
  • Process and analyse data to support operational analysis and decision-making for recovery programmes;
  • Prepare data tables, infographics/maps and contribute to planning and monitoring reports;
  • Produce 4W data analysis and present the data using tabular/ graphical representation;
  • Work closely with clients to identify their needs and advise on the information products and services that UNDP can offer to enhance their recovery work;
  • Develop strong links with other IM staff in the humanitarian and development community to promote coordination and information-sharing between organizations;
  • Ensure appropriate dissemination of meeting minutes, assessment reports and other information products to relevant partners;
  • Maintain contact and distribution lists;
  • Ensure that confidentiality and the right to privacy is maintained with regard to confidential information
  • Produce and update analysis products accompanied by maps, charts, and infographics to support strategic and operational decision-making.
  • Collaborate with NDRMC and UN OCHA Information Management Unit to develop early recovery analysis products.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in information management, social science or related.

Required experience:

24 Months

Experience remark:

  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in information management, information systems, geographic information systems (GIS), database development, web management, visualization, or other related areas;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, in particular, Microsoft Excel
  • Knowledge of current GIS software (ArcGIS, Google Earth, QGIS) desirable
  • Knowledge of Adobe Illustrator desirable
  • Knowledge of database development desirable
  • Experience in mobile data collection technologies and GPS an advantage
  • Experience in conducting research on humanitarian needs analyses, early recovery, peace and security, particularly in crisis contexts would be an advantage;
  • Experience managing information in international development or humanitarian context as well as relevant experience within the UN system is highly desirable;
  • Experience with coordination within the UN system, government or civil society if highly desirable;
  • Knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches relevant to the management of information in an international development or humanitarian context;
  • Ability to conduct data collection using various methods;
  • Conceptual analytical and evaluative skills to conduct independent research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources, including electronic sources on the internet, intranet and other databases;
  • Ability to quickly establish and maintain effective working relations with people of different cultural backgrounds and languages.

This is a national UN Volunteer assignment, therefore only nationals of Ethiopia and legal residents in Ethiopia with a residency permit, the status of refugee or with the status of being stateless are eligible to apply.

Candidates with long-term experience are encouraged to apply. Provided that the respective requirements are met, the assignment might be considered as UN Volunteer expert (15 years of experience), including 40% additional VLA or as UN Volunteer Senior Expert (15 years of experience incl. international experience), including 100% additional VLA.
