This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants. IOM Thailand’s Migration Data and Research Unit (MDRU) conducts a range of primary data collection and research initiatives to foster a better understanding of the situation facing migrants in the country. Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Information Management Officer (MDRU) or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV National Information Management and Geographic Information System (IM/GIS) Officer will:

• Provide information management support to all data collection operations, including assessments and surveys, in different provinces where activities are implemented, as well as to data collection and research activities of other IOM units, as requested. Analyze information sources in Thai language.

Data collection activities • Assist with the effective implementation of various IM tools; including the development and roll out of Kobo-based data collection tools. • Monitor data collection activities as per agreed timelines; perform regular data quality check during data collection activities; prepare project status and progress reports. • Compiling official and unofficial migration data provided in Thai from different data sources for further processing.

Data analysis • Assist with the timely preparation and generation of information products and geo-spatial products, with a focus on monitoring, cleaning, and analyzing data. • Discovering patterns and trends through spatial mapping of data.

Product design • Designing digital maps showing the spatial distribution of various kinds of data using geographic data and other data sources. • Converting physical maps into a digital form for computer usage.

Processes improvement • Assist with the coordination of the data collection processes and the overall data management activities including pre-processing, encoding, storing, and transferring data, as well as processing and analysis of the collected data and information. • Assist with the effective implementation of a digital data library (including geographic data) in various file types. Facilitate the effective use of the designated information system and other databases to collect, store and further process data. • Assist with the regular adjustment and improvement of Information Management and GIS processes, including by identifying gaps and solutions to existing challenges.

External collaboration • Assist the Reporting Officer in the preparation of reports and final products, including but not limited to: data visualization, geographic visualizations, compilation of relevant data from secondary sources.
• Assist with information sharing and dissemination to all relevant channels.

Other • Travel to areas of operation to assist with field implementation, including training and monitoring as needed. • Demonstrate commitment to the Prevention of Sexual Abuse and Exploitation (PSEA) and ensure mainstreaming of PSEA in flow monitoring operations. • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Results/expected outputs:

• As an active IOM team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality support rendered to IOM and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including:

o Supporting information management processes within the team o Providing the team with access to official and unofficial migration data provided in Thai from different data sources for further processing o Increasing the availability of geospatial analysis and products produced by the unit o Support continuous improvement of information management workflows, including assisting with implementation of a digital data library

• Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed

Computer Science, Statistics, Economics, or related fields from an accredited academic institution • Experience in the management and coordination of information flows, data management including collection, storing, processing, and analyzing data to generate information products. • Experience in working effectively and harmoniously with colleagues from various cultures and professional backgrounds. • Strong technical skills in Microsoft Office suite, Excel, Power BI, Kobo/ODK. • In-depth knowledge of the latest technological developments in information technology and information system • Ability to compile and holistically analyze diverse datasets. • Knowledge of GIS software (preferably QGIS or ArcGIS) • Knowledge of R or other statistical analysis software strongly desired. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud Suite advantageous. • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to maintain trust and good working relationships with counterparts. • Ability to work independently, with excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills and according to clear workflows. • Ability to work in challenging settings, under pressure while respecting tight deadlines. • Capacity to learn and gain new competencies, while accepting/giving constructive criticism. • Personal commitment, efficiency, and flexibility. • Strong organizational and time management skills. • Excellent analytical abilities. • Solid understanding of the norms of professional ethics.

Bangkok provides basic living needs, including accommodation, banking facilities, medical facilities and telecommunications/internet services are readily available. All staple foods can be found in the markets, eg: rice, meat, vegetables, fruit, cooking oil, salt, etc. Many imported goods are available in Bangkok and other places throughout Thailand. Bangkok has many good restaurants with good health standards and most guesthouses provide food. In Thailand the most used means of transportation are taxi or local bus (and, in Bangkok, the elevated train service). Mobile phone is the most dependable tool to be in- touch with colleagues and friends. Internet service is readily available and affordable at most apartment complexes. ATMs are everywhere in Thailand and Western cards can usually be used to withdraw Thai Baht. For those with children, schooling options in Bangkok are to be well evaluated and determined before taking your children at duty station. School fees and area really depends on your preferences. Admission fee for school in Thailand ranges from $3,000 - $9,000 and tuition fee from $5,500 - $25,533 (per annum). Depending on educational quality and the area which comes with price tags, you may need to explore more on schools to find out what they could offer that serves the needs of your children. No specific allocation is available for schooling and Volunteers will need to bare the entire costs.
