This is a UNV National Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Youth contracts.

This position is located in the OCHA Regional Office for Southern and Eastern Africa (ROSEA), in Nairobi, Kenya, which supports humanitarian preparedness and response in 25 countries in the region. Under the overall supervision of the Information Management Team Leader, OCHA ROSEA, the Information Management Assistant will join the Information Management Unit.

Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA's mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions.

Under the direct supervision of the Information Management Team Leader, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Support the regular update and management of databases, spreadsheets, and other data tools; ensure the quality of high-value humanitarian data for accuracy, consistency, and comparability; consolidate operational information on a regular schedule to support analysis. • Prepare first drafts of information products such as reports, maps, charts, and info graphics by turning data into graphical products; develop advocacy materials including reports, dashboards, and other visual materials. • Support with the management of content on relevant web platforms, assuring overall quality control for the platform and ensure content is current, comprehensive and follows relevant metadata standards. • Carry-out other activities as requested by the Team Leader.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to: • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities; • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

• Minimum 6 months of relevant experience in information management, data science, geospatial science, or related. • Experience in data entry and analysis software is required. • Knowledge of turning data into visual infographics is required. • Knowledge of mapping data into a GIS software is required. • Knowledge of PowerBI software for data visualization will be an asset. • Knowledge and experience of ArcGIS Online will be an asset.

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
