The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global, regional and national level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP is an Accredited Entity of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

To continue to strengthen this partnership with the GEF, UNEP is seeking a United Nations Volunteer (UNV) Program Information Assistant to join the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Coordination Unit, to assist the GEF Coordination Unit team to support and improve programme coordination and communication functions.

Under the overall guidance of the GEF Coordinator, Corporate Services Division, at the GEF Coordination Office, the UNV volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Provide support in the coordination of programme/project planning and preparation work for GEF programme/project initiatives, including monitoring status of programme/project proposals and receipt of relevant documentation for review and approval • Assist in compiling, summarizing, and presenting basic data on specific programmes / projects and related topics or issues • Provide support in administrative coordination of programme/project implementation activities, in liaison with diverse organizational units to initiate requests, obtain necessary clearances, and process and follow-up on administrative actions, e.g. project/programme approvals, submissions, implementation reports, etc. • Maintain and improve the UNEP-GEF presence across internal communication and information systems, including the UNEP intranet system (WeCollaborate), Digital Asset Management System (DAM), and Microsoft Sharepoint / Teams systems: a. Ensure completeness and accuracy of information of information available via each platform b. Proactively propose and implement approved improvements to internal information systems to enhance utility and usability • Maintain and improve the UNEP-GEF website, including tracking analytics and proposing improvements to enhance reach and usability • Collate and facilitate updates to the Open.unep.org online project database • Track the online communication presence of UNEP-GEF projects across the portfolio and liaise with project teams to facilitate improvements where appropriate/necessary • Track and create regular reports on online and social media related to the UNEP-GEF portfolio, including relevant analytics and suggestions for improvement • Create and maintain an editorial calendar for the UNEP-GEF portfolio, including relevant global events, international and regional days of action and individual project events and milestones • Create and distribute a regular UNEP-GEF portfolio e-newsletter • Create and maintain UNEP-GEF portfolio email distribution lists • Respond to and provide guidance on project and programme requests on branding and other communication issues • Contribute to the development, promotion and delivery of UNEP-GEF portfolio webinars and other online events • Build and maintain strong relationships with other communication staff and departments across the UNEP-GEF partnership • Progressively responsible communication-related tasks as determined appropriate by the UNEP GEF Communication Coordinator

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to: • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark IVD); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities; • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

using Microsoft Office suite and related platforms (e.g. Sharepoint, Teams) - Experience in data analysis and analytics, website management, and graphic design and video production packages (ie – Adobe Creative Suite) is an advantage - Previous experience with the United Nations is an advantage - Knowledge of another official UN language would be an advantage

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighboring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
