Contract

This is a UNV National Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Youth contracts.

Established in 1991, under General Assembly resolution 16/182, UNOCHA coordinates humanitarian action to ensure crisis-affected people receive the assistance and protection they need. It works to overcome obstacles that impeded humanitarian assistance from reaching people affected by crises, and it provides leadership in mobilizing assistance and resources on behalf of the humanitarian system.

Working in the Communications and Information Management Unit, and under the direct supervision of the Team Leader/Information Management Officer, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Provide secretariat and support senior Information Management Officers in establish and maintaining information management working groups in relevant countries in the region during preparedness and/or emergency response, including maintaining close work relationship with a network with humanitarian partners, regional bodies and Governments across the region; • Support with the management of content on relevant web platforms, assuring overall quality control for the platform and ensure content is current, comprehensive and follows relevant metadata standards; support with management of internal databases, including OCHA ROSEA Information Products Catalog, amongst others; • Support the regular update and management of databases, spreadsheets and other data tools; ensure the quality of high-value humanitarian data for accuracy, consistency and comparability; consolidate operational information on a regular schedule to support analysis; • Prepare first drafts of information products such as reports, charts and info graphics by turning data into graphical products to convey messages and a storyline; develop advocacy materials including posters, presentations and other visual materials; • Provide surge and support (both in-country and virtual) to countries within and beyond the Southern and Eastern Africa region, as requested, including to support a wide range of in-formation management functions during emergencies and as part of operational readiness efforts; • Carry-out other activities as requested by the Team Leader.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighbouring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP. The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
