Purpose of the Position

Infection prevention and control (IPC) and Water, Sanitation and health is an important activity within the emergency response framework.

The implementation of the CERF proposal to flood affected states, requires more of hands on and physical presence to enhance the WASH /IPC implementation of the CERF project to able to achieve the results required additional hand is required.

The WASH/IPC assistant will provide additional hand to the implementation of the project in the area of on ground water quality testing, providing practical training to partners and field assessment of IPC compliance and support the WCO WASH/ IPC team lead in conducting TOT training to WASH and health partners in the selected project area.

Objective of the EPNR/ WHE programme:

The mission of the WHO’s health emergency programme is to help countries and to coordinate international actions, to prevent, prepare for, detect rapidly and respond to, and recover from outbreaks and emergencies and to reduce preventable morbidity and mortality as a result of emergencies such as floods.

The IPC/WASH & health Assistant will, closely work with the WCO WASH/ IPC team lead and provide support to Emergency Medical Mobile Team (EMMT) in the CERF project implementation for the floods response in floods affected areas,

He/ She will report directly to the WCO IPC/ WASH & Health team lead WHO Health, under the overall guidance of the EPNR / WHE team lead. For technical issues should, be directed to the WCO, IPC/WASH & health team lead.

Summary of Assigned Duties (Describe what the incumbent must do to achieve main

Objectives: include main achievements expected):

  1. Represent the WCO, IPC/ WASH & health team lead in the field and participate in IPC/WASH TWG meetings.
  2. Conduct field on spot water quality testing through the water supply chain, records water samples collected for testing using the water quality chain on custody tool to capture all information including the geo coordinates of the samples connected.
  3. Provide support in training of TOT’s on infection prevention and control adherence and practical measures to be in place in health facility level.
  4. Provide guidance at field level, primary healthcare facilities to strengthen measures on health care waste segregation and final disposal to enhance good practice of healthcare waste management.
  5. Strengthen routine infection prevention and control for the health facilities in the high-risk states
  6. Fellow up on IPC/WASH supplies, work closely with warehouse team to ensure all IPC/ WASH supplies in the warehouse are effectively and timely distributed to health facilities in the states.
  7. Conduct IPC WASH assessment in healthcare facilities using WASH FIT and IPC core components MOH approves customized questioners
  8. Conduct healthcare worker infection assessment and share data with the WCO IPC / WASH & health team lead and health information data team to support build a data base and Dashboard for healthcare worker infection for COVID-19 tracker.

Education Qualifications

  • Essential

    Certificate / diploma in water, sanitation and hygiene.

    Desirable: Professional qualification in Microbiology and infection prevention and control

Experience

  • Essential
    • At least 2 years of IPC/WASH in healthcare practice,
    • Disease outbreak preparedness and/or response,
    • Relevant work experience in humanitarian emergencies, NGO/INGO other UN Agencies.

Skills

    • Excellent computer skills with ability to use MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint and Good report writing skills
    • Good interpersonal, cross cultural, oral and written communication skills with fluency in oral and written English and excellent report writing skills
    • Patient, with good negotiating and diplomatic skills and able to work in a multi-cultural setting and culturally sensitive communities
    • Energetic and able to work and live in insecure and hardship conditions when on the field
