UNICEF Nepal Country Office works in partnership with national and local governments, civil society, mass media and other development partners to advocate for child rights in Nepal. To pursue this intention, the Office develops a range of communication materials including human interest stories, briefing notes, factsheets, etc. targeted at numerous audiences including government, civil society, business and the media. UNICEF would like to engage the services of writers to provide documentation of UNICEF's work in Nepal including special events, and special assignments to remote areas, in order to produce communication and advocacy materials to be used by UNICEF’s internal and external partners across various platforms in both English and Nepali.

How can you make a difference?

With prior briefing for each assignment, the writers are required to submit communication materials as per the UNICEF Stylebook. The writers should be available at very short notice in case of emergencies such as flood, earthquake, etc. and may be required to work on Saturdays and Sundays, based on the requirements of the assignment.

Specific tasks:

  • Write human-interest stories, factsheets, short reports/summary documents, key message documents, summary of proceedings from meetings/events/workshops and other materials in line with UNICEF’s branding, editorial and ethical guidelines in both English and Nepali.
  • Conduct research, including travel to project sites, interviews, desk reviews and participation in meetings/events/workshops to produce stories with impact.
  • Edit the self-collected and/or UNICEF-provided raw content to develop communication materials including human interest stories, briefing notes, factsheets and reports etc.

Task.

RESEARCH including:

  • In-person/remote interviews
  • Travel to project sites to gather information
  • Desk reviews of existing documents, raw content
  • Participation in meetings/ events/ workshops, etc.

WRITING including:

  • Human interest stories
  • Factsheets
  • Short reports/summary documents
  • Key message documents
  • Summary of proceedings from meetings/events/workshops
  • Other communication material as required

Deliverables:

  • Documentation – audio recording, transcripts, drafts, contact information – relevant to the write-up
  • Write-ups as agreed before the start of each assignment

Duration:

The duration of the Long-Term Arrangement is 11.5 months, tentatively starting from 20 December 2022.

Minimum Qualifications required:

University degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field.

Knowledge/Expertise/Skills required:

  • Evidence of more than five years of professional writing experience; particularly human interest stories and news articles.
  • Previous working experience with UNICEF or comparable international organizations is strongly preferred
  • Fluency in English and Nepali
  • Excellent ability to conduct interviews in complex and testing environments.
  • Ability to generate story ideas and translate complex information into clear and simple language for effective communication with different audiences.
  • Background/familiarity with emergency situations.
  • Excellent communication and working with people
  • Previous experience working with children and young people is preferred.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
