Duties and Responsibilities Organizational setting

The United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for 'sustainable development'. The Convention on Biological Diversity was opened for signature in Rio in 1992. The Convention has 196 Parties and has three main objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal and is administered by United Nations Environment Programme. Its main tasks are to arrange for and service meetings of the Conference of the Parties, including preparation of pertinent documentation, operation of the central node of the clearing-house mechanism, liaison and coordination with other international bodies and processes and, in close collaboration with these partners, the provision of technical support for the effective implementation of the Convention. The Secretariat also supports the technical maintenance of the national Clearing House Mechanism (CHM) portals.

Duties and responsibilities

The Individual Contractor will work under the direct supervision of the Information Management Officer. He/she will perform the following duties:

1. User interface designs for the national clearing-house mechanism portals: Create an overall mobile design concept for the national CHM portals, that consider the human-computer interface element of design; that are aligned with brandings of the United Nations, the Convention on Biological Diversity, and the national CHM portals and are extensible, with sufficient flexibility for use on the web platforms of www.cbd.int and its associated websites and apps.

2. Templates for the website: Create templates that will allow for the creation of a variety of common page types including, but are not limited to: the Home page; key elements on home pages (new features, widgets, interfaces); landing page for major content categories like events, news, GBF goals and targets; generic content pages for specific programmes, including landing pages and content pages; “Article” style pages; search engine results pages; discussion forums; and campaign portals pages.

3. Visual guidelines: Create visual guidelines and options for interactive elements, including form elements, primary and secondary menus, a search bar and other icons and elements, as required.

4. Interface designs and interactions: Maintain user interface designs and interactions with process flows, storyboards, wireframes, and screen specifications.

5. Wireframes and designs: Create website and mobile wireframes and designs that support for the six official languages of the United Nations and ensure that the website infrastructure and its pages support the six official languages of the United Nations and ensure that all deliverables are designed, implemented and configured with this feature in mind. In particular the website and its pages should support right-to-left languages.

6. Collaboration with technical developers: Work closely with technical developers to implement the designs and integrate with websites and mobile apps and after delivery of all content and files, provide follow up support to the work of the team integrating the content.

7. Guidance to the Secretariat on its branding and imagery: Provide inputs and guidance for color scheme, use of icons, buttons, menus, and text for websites, portals, mobile apps, social media campaigns and email communications.

Qualifications/special skills Academic qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent is required. A graduate with professional degree/certification in user interface design and user experience mapping is desirable.

Experience

At least 2 years of relevant working experience in designing and delivering user experience and user interface design projects for large organizations is required.

Skills: - Extensive knowledge of latest user experience design and user interface design practices for web and mobile platforms is required. - Familiar with information architecture and interaction designs is required. - UX/UI experience is required. - Strong knowledge of HTML and CSS is required. - Full knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite is desirable. - Experience with Javascript is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required.
