Duties and Responsibilities

Background: The 2023 Annual Results Report for the UN in Iraq will showcase the progress and achievements of the United Nations Country Team's (UNCT) initiatives and programs in Iraq during 2023. The report should highlight the UN's efforts in supporting sustainable development in Iraq, emphasizing on collaborative actions and results benefitting the Iraqi people. The report will focus on system-wide results across various sectors, underpinning the fourth year of implementation of the UNSDCF (2020-2024). Duties and Responsibilities: The Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) is seeking a consultant in the capacity of a writer to draft the 2023 UN Results Report for Iraq based on inputs obtained from the UNCT. The RCO and the consultant will collect inputs, including stories, data, and photos, from individual UN Agencies and results (outcome) groups that are part of the UN coordination structure in Iraq. The consultant will be provided with relevant materials to facilitate the task, including: • The UN guidelines for UN Country Reports, outlining the template and structure of the report to be written. • Annual Results Reports from other UNCTs around the world. • Data and other information collected from UN Agencies via UNINFO. Duties and Responsibilities: • Prepare the UN Country Results Report for Iraq in line with the corporate template and guidance, including report cover and relevant annexes. • Collect and edit inputs for the results report from UN agencies, with RCO support. • Editing, copyediting, and proofreading draft inputs from agencies to ensure consistent language and a cohesive and holistic report telling a unified story about the 2023 results. Flag issues requiring further elaboration and or clarification by the relevant team. • Drafting of report components as required from provided inputs and information. • Creation of concise human-interest stories from articles produced by agencies. • Ensuring linguistic correctness (grammar, spelling, politically appropriate language, etc.), tone, and style, in adherence to the UN Country Report guidelines. • Collaborate with the relevant teams for report revisions, responding to feedback from the RCO as needed. • Meet with the UNCT’s Strategic Communications Group to explain what is expected from them to generate strategic and compelling content. • Coordinate with a separate graphic design consultant for final layout and formatting. • Final report submission within the designated timeline.

Qualifications/special skills

A Bachelor’s degree in communications, development studies, international relations, social sciences, humanities, economics, law, or related area is required. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in writing reports, editing, and finalization of situation analyses, strategic communications, and reports is required. Demonstrated experience as a content writer, proofreader, or copy editor is required. Working experience in drafting and finalizing reports on international development is required. Experience carrying out research, analysis and assessments with recommendations is desirable. Background in economic/rural development, poverty analysis, development, and planning is beneficial is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
