You have:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of legal and social aspects of enhancing access to justice is desirable.
  • At least 1 year of work experience in legal research, criminal justice and/or access to justice is required.
  • Work experience with an international organization in criminal justice reform and/or access to justice is desirable.
  • Knowledge of any other UN official language is an advantage.

Result of Service

• Support the team in preparing reports, following up on bilateral and multilateral meetings organized during CCPCJ. • Support the team in providing services to the UN-IATF-P including preparing and organizing an exhibition for UN COPS meeting, to be accomplished by 15 July 2024. • Support the team in planning, preparing and organizing the regional conference on legal aid for Southern African countries, scheduled for September in Namibia, to be accomplished by 15 August 2024. • Support the team in planning, preparing and organizing the global conference on legal aid scheduled for November in Vienna, to be accomplished by 15 September 2024. • Support the team in planning, preparing and organizing the expert meeting on equal access to justice for all, including communication with individual experts, preparation of documentation and logistics, to be accomplished by 15 October 2024.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Individual Contractor will provide short-term support to the work of the Access to Justice Team in the implementation of its work. The Individual Contractor will be based in Vienna, Austria, and will work under the overall guidance of the Team Leader, Access to Justice, and direct supervision of the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer who acts as focal point for the area of access to legal aid. Under the supervision of the Team Leader, Access to Justice Team, the Individual Contractor will be responsible for carrying out the following overall tasks: • Assist the Access to Justice Team in planning, organizing and implementing technical assistance activities; • Assist the Access to Justice Team in carrying out its functions as substantive backstopping of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) and preparations for the Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice; • Assist the Access to Justice Team in developing communication material and organizing global and regional events.

Qualifications/special skills

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Knowledge of legal and social aspects of enhancing access to justice is desirable. Excellent analytical and drafting skills are required. At least 1 year of work experience in the area of legal research, criminal justice and/or access to justice is required. Work experience with an international organization in the areas of criminal justice reform and/or access to justice, is desirable. Experience gained from any work assignment with the United Nations or other international organizations is desirable. Emphasis on criminal justice is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of any other UN official language is an advantage.
