How can you make a difference?

The Regional ICT & Digital Innovation Section, UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Office (EAPRO) is seeking an individual consultant to provide technical writing support to InForm. As UNICEF proceed in rolling out and scaling up InForm, the platform will need documentation, training materials, and knowledge base to support the relevant community of practice. The Consultant will work in close coordination with the Regional Data Specialist, with InForm’s product and community manager, and supervised by the Regional Technology for Development (T4D) Business Analyst.

Work Assignment:

Description of the Assignment:

The Consultant will provide specialized support in the ideation, draft, and creation of technical writing products, including knowledge base articles, training materials, reports, and communication content. S/he will assist with the planification and production of relevant progress and impact reports, including liaising with client Country Offices and end users, to ensure the highest possible quality of the reports and knowledge content supporting the InForm platform. The Consultant’s duties will include:

  1. Ideate, draft, and produce written content, including:
  • InForm’s guidance documents, SOPs, “playbooks,” templates/tools, etc to be used by T4D personnel and/or end users.
  • Training scripts, including to be included in videos and interactive channels.
  • Human interest stories and other public facing content of selected InForm projects.
  • Product overview documents for InForm and related technologies (such as Superset dashboards, integrations with DPGs like RapidPro and DHIS2 and with data visualization platforms like PowerBI, and others).
  • Content to drive better usage and learning, such as feature overviews, tutorials, and tips/tricks.
  • Content to introduce and promote exploration and analysis of data generated by InForm and other T4D tools.
  • Technical manuals for setup and configuration of software tools.
  • Case studies, implementation overviews, and deployment experiences with products by UNICEF and others.
  • Copywriter’s manual and documentation guidelines for all technical documents
  • Develop global content library to streamline InForm knowledge management and capacity building with the UNICEF InForm platform.

    1. Develop, maintain, and animate a community of practice, including: o Develop, curate, and maintain capacity strengthening and learning materials, including and not limited to online trainings, knowledge base articles, FAQs, etc.
  • Ensure knowledge management best practices including codifying SOPs and guidelines for data collection using the Common Data Platform.

  • Actively drive contribution and community engagement with UNICEF’s Common Data Platform, including consolidating, summarizing, consulting, and fermenting ongoing discussions around new features, bugs, updates, upgrades, and updates.
  • Generate onboarding contents, documents, and trainings.
  • Identify and celebrate champions, encouraging them to take leadership roles within the community. Gather, curate, and disseminate success stories from champions.
  • Help remote teams collaborate effectively. Harvest, curate, and share knowledge products and learning summaries (case studies, success stories, best practices, learning articles, etc.) towards promoting better understanding, knowledge and learning within the Common Data Platform community with the ultimate objective of contributing to a culture of learning.
  • Animate a community of practice around data collection – and relevant data management and analysis – making use of all relevant corporate tools including and not limited to Yammer, ICON, etc.
  1. Plan, schedule, collect, draft, and produce InForm’s official reports, including to donors and supporting stakeholders.
  2. Any other duties as required.

Work Schedule: Work plan and schedule will be agreed upon at the start of the contract by the consultant and contract’s supervisor.

End Product(s):

  • The Technical Writer is expected to lead the ideation, draft, production and planification of written content, knowledge base articles, training materials and official reporting to support the roll-out, uptake, and scale-up of the InForm common data platform. Deliverables include:
  • Training materials for written and interactive channels.
  • Communication content including human interest stories, interviews, and articles on internal and external communities.
  • Content for websites and intranet pages related to the InForm data platform.
  • Codified SOPs and guidelines for data collection using the Common Data Platform.
  • Knowledge base articles including best practices, how-to, tips and tricks about data collection and analytics using the InForm platform.
  • Engaged UNICEF data and analytics community through posts and responding to functional questions, product roadmap / feature previews, and examples of best practices.
  • Plan and manage the calendar of InForm’s official reports to donors and key stakeholders.
  • Manage and lead the production of InForm’s official reports to donors and key stakeholders.

Duration of Contract: 11.5-month full-time throughout the period of 1 November 2021 - 15 October 2022

Working Location and Official Travel:

The consultant will work remotely from his/her premises. Priority will be given to candidates located in a central or eastern timezone within 5 hours of GMT/UTC +3. Consultant to use own laptop and other necessary infrastructure/equipment. The Consultant will be under the direct supervision of the Regional T4D Business Analyst and work in close coordination with CO’s data teams and the RO ICT and Digital Innovation Unit. Also, Digital Centre of Excellence (DCoE) in Nairobi as possible supervision should the need arise for shifting responsibility from EAPRO.

Any required travel and logistics related to this assignment will be discussed with supervisor in advance and agreed upon mutually.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education:

A university degree is required in Journalism, Business Analysis, ICT Management, Computer Science, Innovation, Digital Development, International Development or another relevant technical field.

A first-level university degree in a relevant field combined with five years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • At least three years of experience in Knowledge Management, Community Management, as a technical writer, or in a similar role.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate highly technical information into easily understandable information for stakeholders, especially in the social, public, development, or humanitarian sector.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.
  • Excellent written skills in English.
  • Complete knowledge of Microsoft Office and Microsoft Sharepoint.
  • Creative writing experience is a big plus.
  • Experience writing software documentation for multicultural audiences.
  • Comfortable coordinating between multiple remote teams and stakeholders.

  • Excellent communicator of concepts both verbally and in writing to a developing country government and international audience.
  • Experience planning, writing, editing, and collating official reports.
  • Experience writing, editing, researching, and planning technical documentation (e.g., software).
  • Excellent skills in grammar, minimalist documentation design, and effective information architecture.
  • Proved excellent technical and creative writing skills.
  • Ability to communicate and engage with experts and stakeholders from different fields, including policymakers, researchers, and the civil society.
  • Works independently and is problem-solving oriented.
  • Strong analytical, research and report writing skills.
  • Effective project management skills.
  • Ability to work comfortably in a fast-paced environment.

Language Requirements:

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language or local language of the duty station is considered as an asset.
