Overview

Assist in promoting UN activities in Hungary

You have:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A first-level university degree in public information, international relations, political science, or a related field is desirable.
  • A minimum of two years of relevant working experience in public information is required.
  • Working experience in the UN system is desirable.
  • Good written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Good computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office is desirable.
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Fluency in oral and written Hungarian is required.
  • Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Result of Service Under the general direction of the Public Information Officer, the Individual Contractor provides assistance in the management of all tasks related to the promotion of activities of the UN in Hungary. Further tasks are ongoing media and social media monitoring, sending stories on a regular basis to UNIS; Translation of press releases and other information material from English into Hungarian; Assisting with public outreach activities in Hungary or events involving Hungary. If requested travel to conduct official functions.

Duties and Responsibilities This position is located in the United Nations Information Service (UNIS) Vienna (Austria), Campaigns and Country Operations Division, Department of Global Communications (DGC). UNIS provides public information support and promotional services to the substantive programmes of the United Nations based in Vienna and acts as Secretariat to the United Nations Communications Group (UNCG) in Vienna. It serves the following client countries - Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia and is taking over a new regional oversight role to provide guidance and support to UN Information Centres (UNICs) and UN Offices (UNOs) in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Czechia, Georgia, Poland, Türkiye and Ukraine. The United Nations Information Service (UNIS) Vienna is required, in its capacity as United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) for Hungary, to provide public information services to media, educational institutions and civil society in that country. Among the tasks during this period will be translation of communication texts, monitoring Hungarian media for UN-related news, assisting in organizing outreach events and activities in Hungary, including UN Day and Human Rights Day, and adding to UNIS’ media and civil society contacts.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English and fluency in oral and written Hungarian are required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
