Result of Service Together with the Climate Action Subprogramme coordination team, establish robust and systematic collaboration across programmes on Transparency. By improving our integration of climate data, statistics and capacity building, with the UNFCCC process, UNEP will be able to provide better support countries to meet the requirements of the Enhanced Transparency Framework of the Paris Agreement.

Duties and Responsibilities Organizational Setting:

The United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Policy and Programme Division is responsible for the organization's strategy, overseeing special initiatives, which includes environment and security work, and the organization's performance review and monitoring. This position is in the Climate Change Subprogramme Unit of the Policy and Programme Division at the Nairobi Duty Station and reports to the Head of Programme Performance Support Unit of UN Environment Programme.

Purpose:

The purpose of this Individual Contractor is to provide support to the Climate Action Subprogramme in its work on transparency. The junior consultancy is part of the Climate Action Subprogramme Unit within the UNEP Policy and Programme Division in Nairobi. Under UNEP’s Medium-Term Strategy and Subprogrammes, UNEP has been requested by member states to deliver 2025 outcomes, direct outcomes on Transparency, in support of the Article 13 of the Paris Agreement. UNEP performance is also measured through a dedicated indicator on transparency. To deliver on this programmatic mandate UNEP will align and build synergies across its Science-Policy, Digital Transformation and Climate Action subprogrammes.

UNEP’s work effort on transparency rests on high-quality, credible, open, shared, sex-disaggregated environmental data, assessments, and expertise. Particularly, it adds value to UNEP's role as the leading environmental authority, which sets the environmental agenda, entails coherent implementation, and promotes use of authoritative data sources for informed climate action. As the UN Environment Programme continues its support countries to measure and monitor progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals and other international environmental goals, it will facilitate timely data analysis, early warnings and science-based decision-making. Among other initiatives, the Climate Action subprogramme seeks to enhance existing work in UNEP through alignments with digital transformation, Science-Policy subprogrammes, as well as a World Environment Situation Room (WESR) for gathering and sharing data and knowledge on the environment.

The Individual Contractor will help the Subprogramme Coordinator to coordinate and align UNEP work on climate-related data, statistics and country support towards high-quality and regular reporting to the UNCCC.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Individual Contractor will contribute to the coordination and Climate Action Subprogramme by undertaking the following project/tasks:

Prepare meetings, manage calendar invites and take minutes (aimed at locating and collecting data analysis platforms, teams, reports, and data sources which can inform Transparency process).

Compile stock-take on UNEP’s work connected to the Enhanced Transparency Framework

Contribute to development of materials for presentations, incl. PowerPoints and talking points.

Conduct climate data/transparency research, e.g. mapping and visualizations.

Participate and report on webinars, dialogues and workshops attended on behalf of Climate Action subprogramme;

Qualifications/special skills Skills: Time management skills with ability to produce high-quality content to tight deadlines. Good research skills.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain good working relations across diverse stakeholders in a multicultural and geographically diverse environment.

Able to build and develop networks with internal and external teams

Able to contribute to strategy and take a hands-on approach to delivering work. Academic Qualifications: A University degree in international relations, business, journalism, finance, event management, public relations, climate change, environment management or a related field is required.

Experience: Minimum 2 year working experience in the climate change space, international relations, communications and or research and analysis is required.

Up-to-date proficiency in the use of multimedia tools for meetings, collaborations and for research and analysis is desirable.

Able to write and edit engaging content for a range of audiences on the topic of sustainable finance (articles, social media content, email newsletters, is required.

Working knowledge of climate change and ability to visualize climate data and transparency desirable.

Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in oral and written English is required.
