Duties and Responsibilities

Since 2017, the UN DESA’s Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD) has housed the substantive mandate on sport for development and peace (SDP) at the United Nations. Through A/RES/77/27, the General Assembly has called for the Secretary-General to report on the implementation of this resolution entitled “Sport as an enabler of sustainable development”, including by providing a targeted review of the contribution of sport to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. In its resolution on Sport as an enabler of sustainable development (A/77/27), the General Assembly, inter alia, calls upon the relevant entities of the United Nations system and other international and regional organizations, to advance the role of sport as an enabler of sustainable development, in line with the United Nations Action Plan on Sport for Development and Peace and to contribute to the achievement of the Goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda. The Division will engage an individual contractor to assist with the preparation of the Secretary-General’s report on sport to be submitted at the 79th session of the General Assembly as well as related products for the realization of the mandate on sport for development and peace.

Under the overall supervision of the Director and direct supervision of the Social Affairs Officer, DISD/DESA, the individual contractor will:

  1. Support the organization of an expert group meeting on sport which will provide inputs to the Secretary-General’s report on sport, including summarising the outcomes of the meeting.
  2. Compile and analyse inputs received from Member States, UN entities and other stakeholders in response to the Note Verbale and Memo dispatched by DISD.
  3. Support the preparation of an annotated outline for the Secretary-General’s report on sport and based on feedback received from DISD, contribute to drafting the draft Secretary-General’s report on sport.
  4. Integrate feedback from DISD to revise and submit the final Secretary-General’s report on sport.
  5. Contribute to the drafting of policy and advocacy briefs, speeches, talking points and background notes on sport for development and peace.

Qualifications/special skills

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in social science, economics, political economy or related field. A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of social policy and development. Experience in conducting international comparative research on social development. Previous experience and familiarity with the work of the United Nations system. Experience in preparing reports on social development and/or, a history of academic publications on sport for development and peace is required, preferably within the UN system. Excellent research, analytical, writing and communication skills. Capacity to work under tight deadlines and accommodate change. Ability to work independently. Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.
