Purpose of assignment:

UNICEF Maldives Office has been supporting the government of Maldives in the COVID-19 response since the beginning of 2020, so as to ensure that this pandemic does not affect the positive results the country has achieved for children and adolescents. The areas of UNICEF support includes:

  • Continuation of learning via distance learning and the safe reopening of schools,
  • Continuation of essential health services for children and women including immunization, growth monitoring, and ANC,
  • Strengthening and expansions of l mental health and psychosocial support services,
  • Enhancing the technical support to build the capacity of national social worker force responding to cases involving children and adolescents.
  • Expanding the coverage of the social protection system to most vulnerable segments of the population,
  • Strengthening risk communication and community engagement to provide life-saving information and influencing positive behaviours.

UNICEF Maldives is therefore seeking the services of a professional photographer to document the work which UNICEF is contributing towards with the Government of Maldives and partners; and capture the lives of children / adolescents across the country during this period of time. The photographs will complement print and digital communication / outreach products to be developed by UNICEF Maldives with a view to continue promoting and strategically position and advocate for child rights.

Basic project objective:

The overall goal of this consultancy is to provide visual documentation of the work supported by UNICEF Maldives and capture the moments in the lives of children / adolescents to produce communication and advocacy materials to be used across various platforms.

The assignment aims at professional photographic coverage of UNICEF-supported activities (programmatic interventions) including first person narrative visual story-telling, infrastructure support, people accessing essential services and children's lives in the Maldives to capture positive, everyday voices through portraits of children, adolescents and families.

Scope of work

  1. Photographic documentation in greater Male' region.
  2. Descriptive captions for all edited/finalised photos; quotes from central characters/subjects in the photo coverage serving to tell a first-person narrative story; quotes from of a more personal nature from photo coverage characters/subjects directly addressing the camera with their gaze.

Content production with distribution platforms in mind:

  1. Coverage of programmatic interventions - professional photojournalism/documentary coverage of UNICEF supported activities as part of COVID-19 response (Education, Child Protection, Health and Nutrition, Social Protection and Communication for Development).
  2. First person narrative visual storytelling with captions & quotes - professional photojournalism/documentary storytelling focused on an individual subject, telling the story through the life and experiences of an individual. Visual storytelling includes captions and first-person quotes furthering the story-telling. Possibly a hero character in the narrative that is facing a challenge. Give some additional personality to the individuals beyond the main theme of the photo.

Responsibilities:

  1. UNICEF to cover costs of the photographer including: Daily Sustenance Allowance (DSA) as per UN standard rates per working day and internal transportation costs (based on actuals).
  2. The photographer supplies all photographic equipment and agrees to provide rough edit selections of best images, with complete caption information.
  3. The broad edits (for selection) and final selected, edited images will be transferred electronically or by portable drive.
  4. UNICEF would have exclusive rights to all originals taken on this assignment to all media acquired through this consultancy in perpetuity.

Duty station: Home-based with travel to the islands if clearance is received from authorities. If not images to be shot in greater Male' region.

Supervisor: Communication for Development Officer.

Estimated duration of contract and deadline for submission of end-product: 14 working days (in August 2020)

Official travel involved: Travel to selected islands based on clearance.

Major tasks to be accomplished:

  1. Visual documentation of programmatic interventions (COVID-19 response)
  2. First person narrative visual storytelling with captions & quotes

Details:

  • All images taken need to be compliant with the UNICEF Photographers guidelines (Nov 2014).
  • All photographs must accompany a UNICEF Editorial Photography Subject Release Form with the additional details:
  • Brief description of the photograph
  • Name of the photographer
  • Signature of the parent/guardian (if subject under 18 years of age)
  • All images need to be in high resolution (either in RAW format or TIFF/JPEG format - 2400 x 1600 pixels). It is preferred that images are shot in RAW.

Copyright of all the images from this assignment will remain with UNICEF MCO.

    • Finalize and handover of selected images

Details:

  • Meeting with supervisor to select final images.
  • Incorporate suggestions/recommendations into final images.
  • Ensure all selected images meet requirements (print/web/mobile and broadcast).

Deliverables:

    1. At least 300 high quality images covering the areas of interest (drafts).
    2. At least 300 high quality images covering the areas of interest (drafts).
    3. -Final, selected 600 images (300 from each area)
    4. -Details of image specifications (print/web/mobile and broadcast)

Note: The payments will be made based on the achievement of the deliverables as follows. Based on agreed fee rates, payments will be disbursed against acceptance of products.

Qualifications:

  • At least 2 -3 years experience in human interest and development-oriented photography.
  • Utilise high-resolution, state-of-the-art digital camera/equipment for the assignment.
  • Have good image editing skills and experience.
  • Be available and willing to travel to islands for the assignment.
  • Have the ability to work under pressure, open to input/scrutiny, respect for national developmental/cultural contexts and deliver on tight deadlines.
  • Have completed secondary school education (certificate). A tertiary, specialized education in photo-journalism would be an added advantage.
  • Experience working with UN agencies and International Organizations would be desirable.
