How can you make a difference?

Purpose of Activity/Assignment: The overall objective of this assignment is to assist the office in editing, proofreading, formatting and finalizing documents, which may include donor reports, from Portuguese to English and vice-versa). The Editor will review and edit documents, including checks on grammar, style, spelling, formatting, and punctuation, with a view to strengthening overall clarity and quality of writing. In rare cases, the editor may need to be involved in substantively revising and reworking documents.

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE.

Edit and finalize draft reports for final clearance by the Hiring Manager, in compliance with UNICEF guidelines and organizational branding rules, to ensure grammatical accuracy, factual accuracy, consistent and logical formatting, coherence etc.

Edit programme-related documents, donor reports and other documents for clarity, readability, and consistency.

Ensure that all content is free of spelling mistakes, and professionally and logically presented removing redundant content.

Review, verify and edit to ensure use of gender and culturally sensitive language in the document.

In collaboration with responsible staff, guide the drafts through fact-checking and copy-editing.

METHODOLOGY AND TECHNICAL APPROACH.

The UNICEF Office, both for its own programme deliverables and on behalf of other sections, has a need for high quality storytelling, editing and proofreading services in both English and Portuguese languages. The specific TOR will be established on case-by-case basis as per needs identified.

ACTIVITIES AND TASKS.

  • Edit quarterly donor reports or other written documents as needed.
  • Ensure quarterly donor reports finalized for clearance at least one week before due date
  • Edit inputs for website before they are uploaded as needed.
  • Edit case studies, lesson learnt, and other publications as required, including but not only briefing documents, fact sheets, and media materials.

    To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • University Degree in English and/or Portuguese

  • A university/higher education degree in translation and/or interpretation will be an asset

Knowledge/Expertise/Skills required:

  • Excellent editing and proofreading skills in English and Portuguese, and Mozambican Bantu languages, as applicable
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Writing, Editing and Proofreading Services.
  • Experience in organizing and conducting English language trainings and English writing skills workshops will be an asset.
  • Familiarity with and use of the UNICEF Style Book will be an asset producing publications, reports, briefing documents, fact sheets, media materials and web content to ensure that the organization’s message is clearly understood. In so doing i will promote consistency in terminology and correct spelling across UNICEF’s documents, and most importantly, it will help UNICEF speak with one voice and
  • inspire confidence in its programmes and activities.

  • Knowledge of Mozambican culture and Bantu languages
  • Familiarity with UNICEF programmes and development issues
  • Ability to work with different teams and deliver to deadlines.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
