You have:

  • BSc degree in Veterinary Science, Biosciences, Biotechnology, Laboratory Technology, Biomedical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or allied fields.
  • At least two years relevant experience for candidates with Bachelor’s degree or four years of relevant experience for candidates with Diploma.
  • Experience of general laboratory techniques and procedures, including vector construction, quantitative RT-PCR, functional genomic analysis.
  • Experience/expertise in in vitro animal tissue culture techniques.
  • Experience with techniques in embryology, assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs), and cryopreservation.
  • Experience in microscopy, gamete, and embryo harvesting and culture.
  • Knowledge of pluripotent stem cell technologies.
  • Good writing skills in preparing reports and manuscripts.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Associate to Support the Livestock Genetics (Cellular Resources, Functional Genomics, Reproductive Technology & Precision Breeding) research group in the development of reliable derivation and propagation of stem cells from mammals and avian embryos, as well as reprogrammed somatic cells for biobanking and resuscitation.

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR Research Centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute the experimental procedures as planned and designed by the research team;
  • Preparation of lab reagents and stock taking of available chemicals,
  • Efficiently use and maintain scientific equipment/machines, reagents used in the laboratories
  • Conduct day-to-day lab activities for livestock Cellular Resources, Functional Genomics and Reproductive Technologies requirements,
  • Order the required reagents and prepare electronic data sheet for the lab,
  • Keep inventory of the lab materials and initiate replacements as required,
  • Assist in sample collection and processing when and where needed,
  • Assist in all laboratory experiments as required,
  • Support students and visiting scientists in laboratory protocols,
  • Support and participate in cellular resources, functional genomics and reproductive technologies trainings in LiveGene activities,
  • Keep detailed records of experiments, organize data, trouble-shoot and assist in determining most suitable experimental methodologies to optimize time, resources, and results
  • Analyse data and present results at regular team meetings
  • Contribute are ensure the secretariat of the weekly laboratory meetings and attend the programme research meetings and seminars
  • Organise and prepare presentations for regular update meetings with the supervisor and relevant collaborators in CTLGH and LiveGene programmes
  • Perform any other related duties as may be required

Position Location: Nairobi, Kenya

Terms of Appointment

This position is at job level HG11 and it is only open to Kenyan nationals. The position is a 3-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes pension, medical and other insurances.
