Background Information - Job-specific

UNOPS has signed an agreement with the DPPA-DPO-Shared Services Information Management Unit (“IMU”) to implement project activities supporting the area of peacekeeping operations.

UN Peacekeeping has outlined a goal to improve “innovative, data-driven, and tech-enabled peacekeeping” in the Action for Peacekeeping + (A4P+) agenda, and more specifically improve strategic data-driven monitoring to enhance the effectiveness of peacekeeping operations. The DPPA-DPO-Shared Services Information Management Unit (henceforth “IMU”) will develop one interoperable system to monitor and evaluate the impact of UN peacekeeping along the A4P+ framework, enabling a common picture of quantitative and qualitative indicators of impact of efforts to strengthen peacekeeping effectiveness. This will facilitate communication to all peacekeeping partners on the concrete impact of overall efforts to strengthen UN Peacekeeping and where we are facing obstacles making progress. To achieve this, the Information Management Unit (IMU) must quickly deliver on a range of tasks that require highly specialized talent.

This internship in UNOPS requires close coordination with IMU. The intern incumbent of this position will be a personnel of UNOPS under its full responsibility. This can be a part-time or full-time internship.

Functional Responsibilities

Our interns work as integral members of our team, pursue projects that are designed to make a significant difference in the whole department, and have opportunities to learn about the United Nations overall.

The Intern will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:

  • Develop corporate visualization solutions derived from multiple data sources using state-of the-art tools to enable insight and decision-making at various levels.
  • Develop data models, relational databases, and other products using SQL.
  • Build and design interactive dashboards and reports, using corporate analytics applications
  • Work on exciting data science products and solutions to solve complex analytical problem
  • Perform ad-hoc analysis and present results in a clear manner

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education: - All applicants must be enrolled in a university programme such as Bachelor, Masters or PhD. (or the equivalent) or have graduated from such studies within three (3) years prior to the application date of the internship.

Work Experience: No prior working experience is required to apply for the internship but the following skills and experiences are desirable.

  • Background in computer science, database management, information management and systems, applied statistics, or a relevant area.
  • Experience with MS Power BI, Tableau or other similar self-service analytics toolsets.
  • Experience with SQL programming.

  • Experience with advanced Excel.

  • Knowledge of geo-spatial analysis and geographic information systems such as ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS, Leaflet, Carto or Open Street Map.
  • Familiarity with analytical techniques such as sentiment analysis, predictive analysis or social media monitoring.
  • A passion for empirical investigation and for answering hard questions with data in a clear and precise way.
  • Familiarity in one or more of Python, R, SPSS, Stata or related tools / technologies

Language: - Fluency in English is required. - Fluency in French is desirable. - Knowledge of any of the other UN official languages is desirable.
