1. Background Information – Kenya Multi Country Office (KEMC)

Located in Nairobi, Kenya, the Kenya Multi Country Office manages a growing portfolio of engagements. The KEMC sub-region currently consists of an established Operation Centre in Nairobi/Kenya which manages a portfolio of engagements in multiple countries in East and South Africa. This includes transactional projects in partnership with the Nairobi based UN Agencies, UN-Habitat and UNEP, and multiple ‘operational’ projects in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique and island states. 2. The Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the US Department of State is actively engaged in Kenya’s efforts to professionalize its national police service. INL supports multiple Kenyan entities (henceforth, the Entities) whose mandate is to bolster police accountability through operational and technical assistance to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

INL, in collaboration with UNOPS, has identified requirements for enhancements to the existing Case Management System (CMS) and implementation of a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system that will require engineering and technical services in support of networks, communication systems, applications, and information systems that are currently operational, under development, requiring upgrades or theoretical.

Functional Responsibilities

Purpose and Scope of Assignment

The ICT intern will be working with the ICT specialist and the rest of the technical team daily to learn and gain experience in various functions, such as:

  • Developing business applications
  • Assisting with technical review and testing of code
  • Participating in knowledge management and quality assurance activities
  • Assisting with technology assessments and gap analysis for projects
  • Helping to create detailed technical specifications and solutions
  • Keeping technical documentation up to date
  • Reviewing code for quality and adherence to coding standards
  • Participating in unit testing and other forms of technical testing of business applications
  • Troubleshooting and recommending fixes to issues or bugs in functionality
  • Documenting work activities and creating test plans
  • Assisting with application testing, user testing, and release management
  • Staying up to date with emerging technologies and suggesting new ideas or solutions
  • Providing quality assurance of developer artifacts and reporting key performance indicators
  • Assisting with change management activities and customer workshops to gather business requirements
  • Maintaining records of project files and sharing best practices and lessons learned.
  • Undertake full documentation of components, configuration, and procedures for installing the ICT networks to ensure it conforms to UNOPS Design Standards and other International Codes and standards.
  • Create and implement various ICT training programs involving different stakeholders

Education

  • A first-level university degree (e.g., Bachelor's) in Information Technology, Computer Sciences, Information Systems or related fields is required

Experience

  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience.
  • Applicants should have graduated from the above stated fields within three (3) years prior to the application date of the internship.

Languages

  • Fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of other UN languages will be considered an asset.

This position is based in a family duty station.

This internship is not designed to lead to a staff position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.

Interns may be eligible for a monthly stipend from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions. Further, UNOPS may provide a one time travel lumpsum of 500 USD. However, they must make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and necessary visa arrangements.
