The UN Women ESARO Strategic Note for the period 2022-2025 focuses on (i) leadership and governance, (ii) women’s economic empowerment, (iii) ending violence against women and (iv) peace, security and humanitarian action. This focus has been determined through analysis and research recognizing the comparative advantage of UN Women. The Strategy is fully aligned to the Africa Strategy and the UN Women Strategic Plan. In implementing this Strategy, there will be focus on the youth and women with disabilities. The Strategy has also adopted cross regional initiatives including Child Marriage, Trafficking in Persons and Strengthening the Women’s Movement for Transformation in Africa. In the Strategy, ESARO has also adopted a Flagship Programme on Making Every Woman and Girl Count (MEWGC) which focuses on gender statistics. With this background there is need to strengthen partnerships and resource mobilization efforts in the Region.

ESARO provides programmatic and operational support and oversight to Multi and Country Offices (M/COs) and collaborates with regional institutions to achieve the objectives. The ICT unit is led by ICT Associate under overall guidance of the Operations Manager and Regional Director. Under the direct supervision of the ICT Associate and overall guidance of the Operations Manager, the ICT Assistant provides ICT and administrative support services to UN Women Regional Office, provides daily technical support to users of information management tools and technology infrastructure. The ICT Assistant works in close collaboration with the Programme and Operations teams for resolving complex ICT-related issues. The ICT Assistant promotes a client-oriented approach. The UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: 1. Provide support to the implementation of ICT strategies and new technologies in accordance with corporate information management and technology standards, guidelines and procedures: • Provide inputs to the development and implementation of the ICT annual work plan. • Provide IT support in the use of SharePoint (UN Women’s information and service portal) functionality for improved business results and improved client services. 2. Provide technical support in the functioning of the RO hardware and software: • Make routine repairs and change hardware electronic components. • Provide technical support to the installation and maintenance of all communication systems including mobile and satellite phones. • Provide technical support to the installation corporate software and related upgrades. • Maintain an up-to-date inventory hardware. 3. Ensure efficient networks administration: • Monitor the network connection on a daily basis to ensure stable and responsive network environment • Configure network printers and provide user access as required. • Trouble-shoot and monitor network problems; respond to user needs and questions regarding network access. • Maintain measures for business continuity and disaster recovery processes and procedures including backup and restoration of both server and local storage facilities. • Provide technical support to Local Area Network (LAN) management in accordance with UN Women requirements. 4. Provide administrative support regarding ICT issues: • Maintain inventory and stock of supplies and spare parts in cooperation with the Procurement Unit. • Research and retrieval of data from internal and external sources; prepare statistical charts, tables, and reports as required. • Provide ICT support to key events. 5. Provide technical support and advice to RO staff: • Diagnose, evaluate, and prioritize requests for assistance from staff in RO experiencing problems with hardware, application software, operating systems, networking and other computer related issues. • Liaise with ICT staff in HQ for support and guidance. • Meet all ICT on-boarding requirements for new staff. 6. Contribute to knowledge building and knowledge sharing in the RO: • Facilitate knowledge building and knowledge sharing in the Regional Office • Identify and promote different systems and applications for optimal content management, knowledge management and sharing, information provision. • Contribute to the organization of trainings for the RO staff on ICT issues. • Synthesize lessons learned and best practices in ICT

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark IVD). • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country. • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities. • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc. • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers. • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Functional competencies: • Good knowledge of PC/LAN operating systems, Microsoft Windows, corporate ICT security and virus protection systems. • Good PC hardware troubleshooting skills. • Good knowledge of video conferencing and telecommunication. • Good knowledge of database packages. • Ability to perform a variety of standard specialized and non-specialized tasks and work processes. • Ability to review a variety of data, identify and adjust discrepancies.

More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
