This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

The UN Volunteer will join the Emergency Preparedness and Response team (EPR), which provides frontline surge and support on humanitarian issues to countries in the regions, the role entails support to preparedness efforts including operational readiness, response to both complex and natural emergencies, including coordination, assessment, humanitarian appeals etc.

Under the direct supervision of the Humanitarian Affairs Officer, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks with a focus on emerging or existing crises, but contributing to other aspects and countries of ROSEA’s coverage as and when required:

•Support coordinated humanitarian operational preparedness for, and response to, emergencies in the region, including through frontline surge, and support (remote and in-person) for the development of relevant products such as contingency plans, the Humanitarian Programme Cycle, flash updates, humanitarian financing (e.g., CERF) etc. •Monitor, analyze, and report on humanitarian developments, disaster relief/management or emergency situations in assigned areas of Southern and Eastern Africa. •Follow developments in countries assigned by the supervisor, keep relevant country profiles up to date, interact with the Resident Coordinator’s Office coordination specialist for assigned countries, and highlight any issues of concern to feed into the daily operational update. •Produce analytical notes to better understand political and conflict dynamics in the region, in support of preparedness and operational work in the region. •Provide frontline surge, in tandem with more senior staff in response to new emergencies, the escalation of existing emergencies, and/or fill critical gaps. •Make contacts and nurture relationships with key interlocutors in your countries of responsibility and thematic areas. •Develop or feed into any country/thematic reports/documents that might be required e.g., snapshots, outlooks, sitreps, etc. •Assist in the production of appeals for international assistance - including Humanitarian Needs Overviews, Humanitarian Response Plans, and Flash Appeals - in the region. •Organize and participate in meetings, conferences and consultations with other agencies and partners on humanitarian and emergency relief-related matters in the region •Support the RCO in the preparation of relevant CERF reports in countries under ROSEA’s coverage without OCHA country offices.

humanitarian/emergency response, human rights, international development, public diplomacy, or other relevant programmes is desirable (candidates with 0 to 3 years' experience can be considered) •Experience working in the Horn of Africa (especially Kenya, Ethiopia and/or Somalia) is desirable.
•Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e., studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighboring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
