Description of task

The assignment will support the OHCHR Regional Office for the Pacific (ROP) in its efforts to promote and protect human rights. OHCHR ROP covers 16 countries: Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands Countries (PICs): Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

Key human rights priorities of the Office include strengthening the rule of law by, for example, providing advice on legislation and policy, training of Police and supporting National Human Rights Institutions. ROP also prioritises work on climate change; youth; enhancing civic space and participation, including in relation to women human rights defenders and persons with disabilities; business and human rights and support for the international human rights mechanisms eg the Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review, the Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures. The Office engages with a wide range of stakeholders including governments, civil society, national human rights institutions, academic institutions, professional associations and individual rights holders, as well as the international human rights mechanisms, wider UN system and inter-governmental organizations.

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Representative, OHCHR Regional Office of the Pacific, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks in support of OHCHR human rights priorities:

  • advocating and providing advice on human rights issues;
  • facilitating learning and transfer of knowledge about human rights, including through trainings;
  • facilitating dialogue between diverse stakeholders on human rights issues;
  • supporting human rights education;
  • building networks and alliances to extend human rights promotion and protection;
  • supporting the functioning of the human rights mechanisms;
  • raising human rights awareness.
