Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Global Compact is the world’s largest sustainability initiative with over 16,000 participating companies in over 160 countries and nearly 70 Local Networks around the world. As a special initiative of the United Nations Secretary-General, the United Nations Global Compact is a call to companies everywhere to align their operations and strategies with Ten Principles in the areas of human rights, labor, the environment and anti-corruption.

The United Nations Global Compact is seeking a consultant to work on the rollout of its human rights and gender equality strategy in Africa. This includes implementation of the Business & Human Rights Accelerator and “Target Gender Equality” programmes and increasing business uptake of the Human Rights Principles of the UN Global Compact and the Women’s Empowerment Principles and related materials, as well as localizing and adapting resources.

The consultant will work closely with the Global Compact Local Networks in Africa to:

¿ Promote the human rights and gender global programme offerings, including the following Accelerator programmes: o Business & Human Rights (focused on human rights due diligence) o Target Gender Equality (focused on target setting for women’s leadership)

¿ Solicit opportunities for engagement of high-level regional representatives, focus group discussions, preparation of policy recommendations, and analysis and presentation of aggregate data and results from relevant assessment tools

¿ Conduct data tracking and provide support for Accelerator participants in between workshops

¿ Support the organization of regional sessions related to social sustainability and other regionally relevant efforts through the UN Global Compact Academy

¿ Create a programmatic guidance, workplan and corresponding checklist to guide the Local Networks in recruiting companies for The WEPs 100 Call to Action

¿ Advises on the approaches of mainstreaming of the human rights and gender strategies in the workstreams of UNGC companies through organizing onboarding sessions on human rights and gender equality and raise visibility and awareness through outreach, communications and by proactively pursuing speaking opportunities at national and regional events

¿ Lead the identification and creation of regionally relevant case studies and good practice examples on human rights and gender equality

¿ Organize consultations with Local Networks to feed into the launch of a regional peer learning group and roundtable discussions

¿ Feed up relative information to global newsletters/bulletins and actively contributing to online groups

¿ Provides consultations on relevant topics such as salient risks by region and industry, human rights due diligence, women’s entrepreneurship and gender responsive procurement

¿ Support relationship building with regional UN offices (including specialized UN agencies) and other relevant actors

¿ Conduct research and support regional fundraising efforts when relevant opportunities arise

¿ Advise on other local or regional programmatic priorities and pilots related to the portfolios gender equality or human rights

Qualifications/special skills A first-level university degree in Corporate Sustainability, Gender Studies, Human Rights, International Development, Sustainable Development, Law, Business Administration or a related field. Minimum of five years of relevant experience in the areas of sustainable development or corporate sustainability including a minimum of three years of relevant experience specifically related to gender equality and/or human rights Experience in programme management including programme design, monitoring and evaluating and reporting using the relevant frameworks, demonstrating high attention to details and skills in presenting and organizing information, is desirable. Experience in public speaking and virtual facilitation of training and programmes that appeal to a diverse audience is desirable. Experience managing multi-stakeholder partnerships and consultations is desirable.

Languages Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
