You have:
- Advanced university degree in Apiculture, Agriculture, Agribusiness, Rural Development, or related field.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in apiculture and/or livestock value chain development.
- Working knowledge of English (Level C).
- National of Sierra Leone
Organizational Setting
FAO Sierra Leone, in collaboration with UNICEF, WFP, and WHO, is implementing a Joint United Nations Nutrition Programme (UNN) aimed at strengthening food and nutrition security, climate resilience, and livelihoods.
The programme targets vulnerable populations, particularly women, youth, and smallholder farmers, and contributes to the Feed Salone Strategy and UNSDCF outcomes.
Within this framework, FAO supports apiculture (honey production) as a livelihood diversification activity contributing to: • improved household incomes, • nutrition-sensitive livelihoods, • climate-resilient production systems, • and value chain development.
The assignment will provide technical and operational support to the implementation of apiculture-related activities under the guidance of FAO technical teams and designated government counterparts.
Reporting Lines
The incumbent will work under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative (FAOR), and the direct supervision of the Assistant FAOR (Programme). The incumbent will work in close coordination with the National Technical Coordinator, the Lead Technical Officer (LTO), designated technical focal points, implementing partners and field teams.
Technical Focus
The incumbent will provide technical support related to: • honeybee production and management, • preparation of technical training materials, • technical support to beneficiary training activities, • compilation of technical and field information, • apiculture-related livelihood support activities.
Tasks and responsibilities
The incumbent will provide technical support under close supervision and will not independently represent FAO, undertake institutional decision-making functions, independently coordinate stakeholders, or independently lead consultative processes.
Technical Training Material Support
Working under the guidance of FAO technical teams:
• Support preparation of technical training modules related to: beekeeping techniques, hive construction using locally available materials, honey harvesting and storage, hygiene and quality handling practices. • Support preparation and formatting of training manuals and extension materials.
Technical Support to Capacity Building Activities
• Support delivery of technical training activities organized by FAO and implementing partners. • Assist in demonstration activities related to: hive establishment, colony management, honey harvesting practices. • Provide technical support during field-based beneficiary training sessions. • Support compilation of training attendance records and technical field notes.
Technical Support to Field Implementation
• Support field-level implementation of beekeeping activities in target communities. • Assist beneficiaries in understanding basic beekeeping practices under guidance of FAO technical teams. • Support monitoring of beekeeping units established under the programme. • Assist in documenting field observations and technical challenges encountered.
Technical Inputs to Value Chain Activities
• Support compilation of information related to: producers, processors, traders, market actors within the apiculture value chain. • Assist in documenting opportunities related to: value addition, storage, processing, local market access. • Support preparation of technical summaries and analytical notes related to honey production systems.
Technical Support to Data Collection and Documentation
• Support collection and organization of technical field data related to honey production, beneficiary participation, training activities, market information. • Assist in maintaining records and technical documentation. • Support organization of technical reference materials and field reports.
Reporting and Knowledge Documentation
• Prepare and submit: technical activity summaries, training reports, field mission reports, technical inputs to final assignment reports. • Support documentation of lessons learned and good practices from field activities.
