Scope of Work

Since 2016, UNICEF is responding to the unique needs of adolescents and young people who are seeking asylum in Europe, on the move, stranded or pushed back. The operation established in Italy aims to provides support to the Government of Italy on children and young migrants and refugees, to ensure timely, equal and appropriate care, protection and support for their social inclusion, as part of the Regional Migrant and Refugee Response.

Moreover, since the war in Ukraine is having a significant impact on the lives of children and families and due to the influx of Ukrainians arrived since the beginning of the conflict, the office in Italy is one of the secondary countries involved in the response to the crisis. Communication and advocacy for the promotion of children’s rights and related policy reform has been a key feature of all 3 programme areas. The production of digital and printed products has been integral to these communication and advocacy interventions and has grown exponentially over the past 5 years.

Under the direction of the Communication Assistant, the consultant will undertake the following in accordance with UNICEF’s most recent global brand guidelines and UNICEF graphics manual:

  1. Design fact sheets, advocacy briefs, brochures, flyers/leaflets, data briefs and/or reports for priority areas of work (2-page, 4-page, 8-page, etc), some of which will be used as media products. The documents will include text, data visualizations and UNICEF photographs.
  2. Design infographics, illustrations, for print and/or digital platforms and social media platforms (Facebook and Twitter).
  3. Design web graphics, logos, design and layout Powerpoint presentations, as requested.
  4. Design information materials for events (cards, posters, banners), as requested.
  5. Liaise with printing companies on the production of specific print products.
  6. Other design tasks, as requested.

Purpose of the Assignment

Under the direct supervision of the Communication Assistant in Rome, Italy, the graphic designer is primarily responsible for supporting the production of branding and design of materials and publications for the National Response in Italy.

The assignment will be home-based in Italy or in any other country with a similar time zone.

Estimated Cost of the Consultancy & Payment Schedule

Payment will be made on submission of an invoice and satisfactory completion of the above-mentioned deliverables. Please indicate a daily fee based on 100 working days to undertake this assignment.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Bachelor's in Design. Minimum 5 years of experience accompanied by professional certifications may replace the degree.
  • At least five years of professional graphic design experience; Excellent creative skills in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign software;
  • Fluent Italian, Intermediate English. The ability to work in other UN languages would be an asset.
  • Ability to deliver high quality products under tight deadlines;
  • Experience working with printing and production companies;
  • Experience working remotely, very responsive over email, teams, zoom, etc;
  • Interested candidates should share a link to their portfolio;
  • Familiarity with UNICEF’s branding and style guidelines; ideally experience designing products for UNICEF or other UN agencies is desired.

It should be noted that selected candidate will be responsible for arranging for their own health and medical insurance. This consultancy does not provide any other benefits other than the consultancy fee and 1.5 days leave entitlement per month and the UN official holidays. Selected consultant will be responsible for complying with local tax requirements and any tax liabilities that may arise as a result of the consultancy with UNICEF.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
