The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has resulted in millions of displaced citizens, with approximately 7 million Ukrainians seeking refuge in Europe (UNHCR 2023). This large-scale migration has significantly impacted the demographic situation in Ukraine, which was already marked by a declining birth rate and a population decrease of 10 million over the past 30 years. Despite the magnitude of the situation, the perspectives and needs of Ukrainian refugees are often not included in discussions around the reconstruction of Ukrainian sustainable cities, and the sustainable resettlement of refugees in the EU cities. To address this gap, this project aims to work directly with Ukrainian refugees in two EU countries to understand their perspectives and needs in terms of urban sustainability and livability.

It is an exciting opportunity for online volunteers to contribute to important research and policy work related to refugee resettlement and urban planning. Developing a Telegram chatbot to conduct a survey among Ukrainian refugees is a practical way to gather data and insights that can inform the reconstruction efforts in Ukraine and policy recommendations for resettlement in EU countries.

The project also provides valuable experience for online volunteers to develop skills in data gathering and visualization in conflict settings. Working with the UN R&D system is a great opportunity for volunteers to gain exposure to the work of the United Nations and contribute to important global initiatives.

Overall, this project has the potential to make a meaningful impact on the lives of refugees in Ukraine and beyond, while also providing valuable experience and professional development opportunities for online volunteers.
