Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in Bangui, within the MOVCON Section of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA). The incumbent reports to the Section Chief MOVCON.

Responsibilities

Within the limits of delegated authority, the Heavy Vehicle Operator at this level will perform the following functions:

• Ability to operate all categories of Materials Management vehicles, including 3, 7, and 15-ton forklifts, PLS trucks, 8-ton and 25-ton flatbed tugs, within the mission area, as instructed by the supervisor. •Ad-hoc transport duties, as instructed by supervisor, such as assisting the Heavy Transport Unit, loading and unloading goods from trucks. •Drive in a professional and safe manner all kinds of vehicles he or she handles on a reserved area, on the airport runway/field runway, on open roads in the Central African Republic. • Ensure that passengers and cargo are legally authorized to travel in the UN vehicle. • Report all accidents immediately, according to established procedures. •Ensure that transported equipment, containers and other materials are received, delivered and handed over against signature. • Be vigilant, respect speed limits and established road codes; • Carry out daily inspections of trucks and other vehicles (before or after starting the engine) and ensure their regular maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions by taking them to the MINUSCA garage. •Secures cargo for transport, using ropes, blocks, chain, binders, or covers. •Maintains logs of working Delivers hours or of vehicle service or repair status, following applicable regulations. •Follows appropriate safety procedures for transporting dangerous goods. •Takes appropriate driver rest periods during trip. •Follows all applicable traffic laws. •Drives trucks to weigh stations before and after loading and along routes to document weights and to comply with all regulations. • trucks into loading or unloading positions, following signals from loading crew and checking that vehicle and loading equipment are properly positioned. •Follows accident procedures if an accident occurs. •Keeps truck, and associated equipment, clean and in good working order. •Performs basic vehicle maintenance checks and services, such as adding oil, fuel, or radiator fluid or performing minor repairs. •Checks conditions of trailers after contents have been unloaded to ensure that there has been no damage. •Cranks trailer landing gear up or down to safely secure vehicles. •Loads and unloads trucks. •Climbs ladders to inspect loads, ensuring that cargo is secure. •Removes debris from loaded trailers. •Performs emergency roadside repairs, such as changing tires or installing light bulbs, tire chains, or spark plugs. •Collaborates with other operators as part of a driving team on some trips. •Perform other tasks as assigned.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Job - Specific Qualification

A valid driving license (category C) is required.

Basic Knowledge of Microsoft Word and excel is desirable.

Work Experience

At least two (02) years of progressively responsible experience as a forklift operator and heavy vehicle driver is required. No relevant experience is requested for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in French is required. Knowledge of English is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
