SCOPE OF INTERN WORK:

With oversight from the Transportation Specialist, the Intern will provide direct support to the Health Promotion program by helping client’s become self-sufficent in navigating transportation in Utah. The Intern will perform bus orientations, provide education on transportation resources, and support other coordination needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conduct bus orientations to Primary Care and other medical clinics with Clients (direct service).

• Schedule and Coordinate Access to Lyft/Uber rides for client medical appointments (virtually).

• Coordinate and provide education on Motive-care, para-transit, and other transportation resources.

• Attend organizational meetings (virtually).

• Case Notes/Document Client services in various databases (virtually)

• Support the overall functioning of Health Programs, projects, and initiatives (virtually)

• Work with interpreters to perform reminder calls to clients about upcoming medical appointments.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. The Transportation Access Intern will gain experience in delivering and developing effective transportation programming that supports newly arrived refugee’s in becoming self sufficient.

2. The Transportation Access Intern will learn about barriers that affect access to public transportation (Bus/Train) for refugee populations and help them navigate the system through one-on-one and group education.

3. The Transportation Access Intern will identify additional transportation resources available within the community, and making them accessible to newly arrived refugee’s.

4. The Transportation Access Intern will learn how to communicate and collaborate with staff/interpreters/volunteers/partners/clients to achieve goals.

5. The Transportation Access Intern will work closely with the rest of the health team to assist clients with extensive health needs.

Qualifications REQUIREMENTS:

• Familiarity with the U.S. Public Transportation system.

• Must be currently enrolled in a graduate/undergraduate program, or have graduated less than 6 months ago.

• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English; fluency in additional foreign languages (Arabic, Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Farsi, French, Dari/Pashto, Burmese, and Spanish) preferred.

• Background check is required.

• Pursuing a degree in health sciences, public health, social work, or equivalent experience.

• Experience working cross culturally and with limited English speakers.

• Strong intercultural communication skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from other cultural backgrounds.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

• Understanding and ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding client information

• Driver’s license, personal vehicle, auto insurance, and clean driving record or other means of reliable transportation.

COMMITMENT:

• Start Date: September 11th, 2023

• Schedule: Minimum of 15 hours/week, maximum of 35 hours/week

• Duration: 12 weeks
