Bangladesh is currently facing a challenging situation with COVID 19. The country saw an increase in the number of COVID 19 cases in April 2021 and for the last few weeks several border districts are experiencing a surge in cases. There is increasing concern on this rise in cases as well as the country’s capacity towards effectively responding to the pandemic. At the same time, there is continued risk in the potentiality of natural disasters like flooding, and climate change related and environmental hazards. All of these have an impact on children’s health and wellbeing with significant risks in turning back the tide on improvements seen over the last few years.

How can you make a difference?

UNICEF is a core technical partner and supporting in country efforts at all levels of service delivery towards an effective COVID 19 response as well as protecting health investments for children’s health and wellbeing. It is critical to provide catalytic support towards improving national and subnational capacities for strengthening the specific health system response and ensuring investments done for COVID 19 are leveraged for long term system strengthening.

It is also important to continue engaging at the national level, supporting coordination efforts, technical working groups as well as facilitating bringing together timely data and information for decision making and action for an effective response to emergencies. At the same time, the support to sub national levels is key to a strong, contextualized response and ensuring the continuity of services for women, children and communities.

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

  • Support to COVID 19 emergency planning, response and coordination, representing UNICEF at various platforms and ensuring a child focused response to the pandemic including supporting work with case management, oxygen, vaccinations, etc.
  • Facilitate bringing together a data driven, contextualized response for COVID 19 and ensuring continuity of services during emergencies working across the data teams and program teams and supporting efforts at national and sub national levels for responsive systems including the oxygen component
  • Providing technical support and efforts towards implementation, tracking and documenting work for the COVID 19 response in country and other natural disasters, climate change and environmental hazards towards building resilient and responsive health systems
  • Being the focal point and supporting coordination of all COVID related projects and implementation research, studies and surveys and supporting the link with overall programming and using the data for decision making, action and results
  • Providing technical support and coordination towards streamlining all procurement and supply related issues for COVID 19 working closely with the program and data teams and the supply teams to track and monitor progress and impact
  • Support the finalization of all donor reports related to COVID 19, and setting up a tracking mechanism to monitor progress linked with results
  • Provide technical support towards identifying needs and gaps in the COVID 19 response, including other emergency related issues, and supporting resource mobilization efforts, partner and stakeholder engagement.
  • Providing support for the emergency, humanitarian response in Cox’s bazaar as a focal point at national level and facilitating coordination between all components of the program teams at national and the field office team
  • Providing technical expertise and support to the documentation of the ongoing work across the COVID 19 response, other disasters, and climate change, and environmental work, etc.
  • Any other areas of work that may arise during the COVID 19 response and in the emergency context

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have:

  • An advanced university degree in one of the following fields is required: medicine. An additional qualification in public health is desirable.
  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in public health is required. Experience in coordinating various stakeholders is needed.
  • Experience in health emergency/humanitarian preparedness, disaster preparedness and in oxygen response systems is desirable.
  • Prior experience in supporting the COVID 19 response at national and/or sub national levels is an added advantage
  • Experience working in a developing country is considered as an asset.
  • Relevant experience in a UN system agency or organization is considered as an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language or local language of the duty station is considered as an asset.
