The world is facing an unprecedented health, humanitarian, socio-economic and human rights crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. While its full impact and long-term fallout is still unclear, one thing is known: the impact of the pandemic on the lives of hundreds of millions of children and women is severe. UNICEF South-Asia region is catering the needs of more than 1.87 billion people in eight countries. As of October 2021, more than 38.5 million cases and nearly 550,000 deaths have been registered in the region, which is ranked amongst the high burden regions. To reduce the impact of the pandemic, acceleration of global efforts to interrupt COVID-19 transmission has geared up countries’ access to COVID-19 vaccines. Realizing the gravity of a massive vaccination target of nearly 1.3 billion people 18 years of age and above, innumerable resources are channeled to South Asia. With this rapid surge in access to COVID-19 vaccines there is immense need for a full-time staff member to coordinate all efforts.

How can you make a difference?

The Health Specialist– COVID-19 Vaccination Programme provides technical support to South Asian countries for acceleration of COVID-19 vaccination amid forthcoming surge in COVID-19 vaccine deliveries through better coordination and collaboration within UNICEF, and between UNICEF, WHO, COVAX and other Partners to strengthen national capacities for accelerating COVID-19 vaccination uptake and coverage.

Key duties and accountabilities

Representing ROSA and its countries in key regional and global COVAX fora and platforms and assisting the senior health specialist in meetings and calls with partners and donors.

Engaging actively in regional COVAX coordination bodies supporting the eight ROSA countries through:

  1. weekly meetings with main partners (WHO and other UNICEF Regional Offices).
  2. technical representation and oversight in the COVAX Regional Working Groups and subgroups for EMRO and SEARO.

Collaborating and coordinating effectively with partners to secure funding and allocate vaccines through COVAX and other regional and global mechanisms.

Providing support to countries for the roll-out of COVID-19 vaccines:

  1. guide countries on various application procedures related to accessing technical assistance, funding, vaccines and equipment among others.
  2. liaise with regional and country immunization supply chain teams for cold chain expansion and with C4D teams for communication and demand generation.

Maintaining oversight of the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out status (COVAX and non-COVAX) in the region through:

  1. regular status update calls and other exchanges with country offices.
  2. accessing and integrating relevant information from various global and regional databases and websites.
  3. updating the regional COVID-19 vaccine dashboard.
  4. liaising and coordinating with the other relevant ROSA sections (Supply, C4D, Communications, Gender, Evaluation).
  5. producing regular sitreps on the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out.

Generating and sharing knowledge products with other ROSA sections, country offices, and HQ.

Provide support to and supervise one consultant assisting the regional health team with COVID-19 and COVAX related matters.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in Public Health or a closely related area.
  • Eight years of professional work experience at the national and international levels in development, planning, programming, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and managing of health/Immunization programmes, deployment of COVID-19 vaccines; being familiar with the various COVAX processes and various procedures to apply for support.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
