You have:

SCOPE OF WORK: The Health Navigator Intern will assist the Health Navigator Caseworker in managing the medical and health outreach programs of the IRC in Los Angeles. The Intern will gain experience networking with healthcare providers, building & managing databases, and working with multicultural individuals with special medical needs.
Under the guidance of the Health Navigator Caseworker, the Intern will connect clients with a variety of community resources by scheduling client appointments and transportation, accompany clients to social services appointments, assisting with applications to community resources, and providing other day-to-day assistance to the family wellness program as needed. This internship requires a high level of responsibility and will provide the intern with ample opportunities for professional development in a social service setting.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- Gain expertise in refugee case management and health resource navigation. - Insight into the economic and cultural hurdles faced by refugees, asylum seekers, and other community members. - Fluency engaging with clients in both a coaching and counseling role.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Train with the Health Navigator Caseworker for two weeks at the start of the internship. - Coordinate and track medical appointments, transportation and interpreter needs for assigned clients. Accompany clients to appointments when needed. - Complete medical intake forms and applications with high attention to detail while advocating for clients’ needs and abiding by HIPPA. - Research community resources and compile recommendations to Health Navigator Caseworker for future partnerships. - Assist with refugee health projects by supporting outreach for future events and administrative duties as assigned by the Health Navigator Caseworker. - Organize client case files and help build Health Navigation database.
Qualifications - This internship is for undergraduate students, graduate students, or recent college graduates. - Arabic, Dari, and Farsi speakers are strongly encouraged to apply! - Orange County locals preferred. - Educational background in social work or equivalent work experience serving low-to-moderate income immigrant populations (including refugees, asylum seekers, etc.) preferred. - Ability to handle sensitive client information confidentially while abiding by HIPPA. - Must be culturally sensitive, respectful of diverse backgrounds and willing to work with English language learners, previous cross-cultural communication experience a plus. - Flexibility, patience, and willingness to learn/perform reasonable duties as needed.
