Overview

Develop and implement ICRC's transport management strategy.

You have:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in logistics, freight forwarding or equivalent.
  • Excellent command (spoken and written) of English and French; German language skills an asset.
  • Typically at least 15 years’ professional experience.
  • Minimum seven years’ experience in international transport and freight forwarding.
  • Minimum five years’ management experience.
  • Expert knowledge of transport operations (sea operations, security, etc.).
  • Expert knowledge of customs documentation and procedures.
  • Experience managing transport in complex and volatile environments.

Deputy Head of Logistics Division

Purpose of the position

The Head of Transport develops and implements the ICRC’s transport management strategy and is accountable for all its transport activities worldwide.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Sets strategies and priorities for the Satigny Transport Management[JB1] Unit (for air, road, rail and sea operations), in accordance with ICRC standards and policies.
  • Supervises the development of global and efficient transport solutions for logistics field operations.
  • Ensures that ICRC operations are compliant with international transport standards, rules and recommendations, such as those issued by the International Maritime Organization and International Civil Aviation Organization and regulations on dangerous goods and customs clearance.
  • Is accountable for the unit’s quality management (including good distribution practices).
  • Ensures compliance with worldwide customs regulations and declaration requirements.
  • Monitors, follows up and reports on transport-logistics indicators and performance indicators for the unit. Keeps abreast of developments in the transport market and reports on trends.
  • Designs and proposes new, improved standard working procedures. Negotiates contracts for transport services to obtain the best possible conditions.
  • Manages and processes transport litigation and claims. Settles disputes with service providers.
  • Ensures business continuity in light of identified risks.
  • Participates in developing logistics tools.

  • Geographic remit: global.
  • Global management of the transport team in HQ and field (direct or technical).

Relationships

  • Internally, interacts with staff in the Logistics and Finance and Administration Divisions.
  • Externally, interacts with logistics service providers, customs authorities, International Air Transport Association (IATA) agents, Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation officers, etc.

Education required

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in logistics, freight forwarding or equivalent.
  • Excellent command (spoken and written) of English and French; German language skills an asset.
  • Very good computer skills and ability to run specialized software.
  • Certification in clearing and forwarding or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.

Experience required

  • Typically at least 15 years’ professional experience.
  • Minimum seven years’ experience in international transport and freight forwarding.
  • Minimum five years’ management experience.
  • Experience managing transport in complex and volatile environments.
  • Expert knowledge of transport operations (sea operations, security, etc.).
  • Expert knowledge of customs documentation and procedures.
  • Experience setting up and managing sea operations (e.g. vessel chartering).
  • Knowledge of key account procedures.
  • Proven experience in successfully negotiating freight rates.
