Background

Corporate Background UNDP works in about 170 countries and territories, helping to achieve the eradication of poverty, and the reduction of inequalities and exclusion. We help countries to develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities and build resilience in order to sustain development results. UNDP is working to strengthen new frameworks for development, disaster risk reduction and climate change. We support countries' efforts to achieve the new Sustainable Development Goals, which will guide global development priorities through 2030. The key 2030 Agenda principle of leaving no one behind and stamping out inequality is at the core of everything we do. UNDP focuses on helping countries build and share solutions in three main areas: • Sustainable development • Democratic governance and peacebuilding • Climate and disaster resilience In all our activities, we encourage the protection of human rights and the empowerment of women, minorities and the poorest and most vulnerable. UNDP established the Green Commodities Programme (GCP) in 2009 in recognition of the importance of global agricultural commodities and how they contribute to economical, social and environmental sustainability and the need to strengthen UNDP’s support and leadership in the field. The programme supports governments to take the lead in creating national environments where sustainable commodity sectors can grow. It does so by: • facilitating neutral spaces where stakeholders can collaborate on a shared vision and agenda for action • building public-private partnerships • sharing what we learn with other practitioners across geographies and commodities. 12 years on, the programme now works in 13 countries acting as a catalyst of systemic commodity sector changes in support of sustainable agriculture in 8 commodities: cacao, palm oil, pineapple, coffee, cashmere, beef, soy as well as fisheries GCP is coordinating the Good Growth Partnership (GGP) Program, an integrated “supply chain” approach to tackling the underlying root causes of deforestation from agriculture commodities, specifically beef, oil palm, and soy, which together account for nearly 70% of deforestation globally. The GGP Program is delivered through a multi-agency consortium including WWF, IFC, UNEP, and CI. The Program provides support to production, generate responsible demand, support enabling transactions and foster adaptive management and learning through multiple child projects. Internship Office Background Since 2014, the Green Commodity Community (GCC) fulfils a pivotal learning, connectivity and knowledge management function towards the Green Commodities Programme (GCP) and Good Growth Partnership (GGP). The GCC has assisted its member-practitioners with their learning and knowledge needs to effectively promote sustainable commodities. Today the GCC counts 200+ members and embodies learning through sharing in five essential ways: • connecting practitioners across commodities, geographies, and organisations • organising learning events on technical and leadership skills essential for modern change makers • facilitating knowledge exchanges between members, their teams, and their stakeholders • providing a state-of-the-art digital space for members to collaborate with their own stakeholders • disseminating knowledge and capturing lessons learnt and turning them into guidance and good practice documents Within the Green Commodities Programme (GCP), and under the supervision of the Green Commodities Community (GCC) Manager, the GCC Intern supports all aspects of GCC operations and assists the Community Lead, Community Manager, Community Adviser and Community Assistant in delivering GCC key activities: improving visibility and outreach, sharpening the relevance and impact of all learning events, expanding membership services, involving & co-creating with members, boosting south-south exchanges, supporting the kick-start of a new FACS COP etc.
