Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Enterprise Branch of the Division on Investment and Enterprise of UNCTAD, Geneva. The incumbent is under the direct supervision of the Chief of Branch.

Responsibilities Within limits of delegated authority, the Graphic Design Assistant will be responsible of the following duties:

  • Organizes, plans, controls and co-ordinates the work of the Division with respect to the production of camera-ready documents for reproduction and storage of final text.
  • Produces camera-ready documents for reproduction by formatting complex documents in desktop publishing layout; this includes data input from audio or live dictation. Incorporates changes as marked by editors, translators and revisers, ensuring that the final version of the document conforms to, (a) the draft translation as to contents, and/or (b) the original language manuscript as to format and typography, in accordance with existing editorial guidelines.
  • Participates in initial meetings to discuss potential design projects, e.g. substantive content, communication objectives, media (including electronically published products) and design options, technical specifications, costs, schedules/deadlines, etc.
  • Independently undertakes design assignments, including high priority requests, for a variety of UN-sponsored activities (e.g. major conferences, observances, events and campaigns, etc.); conceptualizes and develops design proposals for review by clients, which may include photographic, illustrative or more abstract graphic solutions.
  • Create infographics for printed material, as well as for inclusion in webpages, animated videos and social media.
  • Redesign and conceptualize documents, moving from a text-based to a visually-based communication standard.
  • Performs proof-reading functions ensuring that changes have been incorporated as marked in the draft copy and alerting the responsible authority if obvious errors or discrepancies are found in the translated text.
  • Systematically follows through and retrieves, highlights and compiles information from a wide variety of information sources; prepares input for the electronic database and the internet and co-operate with research institutes and organizations in the collection of data.
  • Prepares a variety of presentations, tables, lists, charts, data sets, and/or diagrams for information to facilitate the in-depth analysis of the retrieved information by the supervisor and other users.
  • Provides guidance and training to new/junior staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Competencies - Professionalism: Knowledge of standard industry production and printing processes, including desktop publishing, design and layout. Knowledge of internal UN printing practices and operations. Knowledge of photography, page layout and photograph sizing. Good graphic art skills and demonstrated ability to independently develop creative designs and produce high-quality graphic material for varied print media projects (e.g. posters, brochures, press kits, book covers, book designs, etc.). Ability to handle multiple design projects simultaneously. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations.

  • Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

  • Technological Awareness: Keeps abreast of available technology; understands applicability and limitation of technology to the work of the office; actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks; shows willingness to learn new technology.

    Education High school diploma or equivalent.

    Job - Specific Qualification Specialized training in graphic arts is desirable.

    Work Experience A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in publications production, including desktop publishing, graphic design and layout, or related area is required.

    Out of these, at least two years within the United Nations Common System is desirable.

    Experience in collecting and researching data across various areas of social economic development or related area is desirable.

    Experience in proof reading of documents is desirable.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

    Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.
