Security Situation Brazzaville is generally considered more stable than many other African capitals, though petty crime exists. The city has visible security presence, and most expatriates live in secure compounds. Night travel should be cautious, and it's advisable to avoid political demonstrations.
Climate Brazzaville has a tropical wet and dry climate with: • Average temperatures: 24-30°C year-round • Dry season: June-September • Rainy season: October-May (with heaviest rains March-May) • High humidity throughout the year
Cultural Awareness • Dress code: Conservative dress is recommended, especially for women. Business attire tends to be formal. • Alcohol use: Available but consumption should be moderate and culturally sensitive. • Language: French is the official language; Lingala and Kituba are widely spoken.
Cost of Living Relatively high for a regional capital: • Imported goods are expensive • Local produce and markets offer more affordable options • Housing in secure compounds can be costly • Overall costs are higher than in many West African cities but lower than some major global capitals
Basic Services • Electricity: Intermittent supply with frequent power cuts; generators or inverters are essential • Water: Municipal water supply may be unreliable; many residences use bottled water for drinking • Food: Markets offer local produce; imported goods available in supermarkets at premium prices
Medical Facilities • Basic medical care available at local facilities • Serious medical conditions typically require evacuation to South Africa or Europe • Limited availability of specialized medications • Malaria prophylaxis strongly recommended
Banking Facilities • Several international and local banks operate in the city • Credit card acceptance limited to major hotels and some restaurants • ATMs available but may have withdrawal limits and occasional technical issues
Communications Infrastructure • Mobile network coverage generally good in urban areas • Internet connectivity available but can be slow and unreliable • 3G/4G services available from multiple providers
Additional Considerations • Transportation: Taxis are the primary mode of public transport; driving can be challenging due to road conditions • Official procedures: Bureaucratic processes can be time-consuming • Cultural integration: French language skills greatly facilitate daily life and professional interactions
