Job Overview: Under the direction of the Development Manager, the Grants Writer works to leverage public and private funding opportunities for IRC’s Washington’s offices through prospecting, proposal writing, grants management and reporting. The Grants Writer is responsible for conducting the full range of pre- and post-award activities required to prepare, submit, and comply with grant proposals to federal, state/local and private foundations. Work is performed in collaboration with IRC Washington’s leadership, development, finance, and program staff, as well as headquarters’ revenue, grants and business development staff.

Major Responsibilities:

Pre- and Post-Award Grants Management (80% of time)

· Research and assess funding opportunities from local foundations, corporations, and other philanthropic institutions for specific program areas and projects in accordance with IRC Washington’s strategic plan.

· Be involved in program design workshops as requested by Development Manager or Deputy Director Programs for new business development opportunities and help to facilitate notes and action items.

· Liaise with the headquarters’ revenue, grants and business development staff on all new contracts, grants, amendments, and sub-grants.

· Maintain IRC Washington’s proposal calendar.

· Maintain grants management tracking and donor tracking system and regularly update the Northern California leadership team with accurate data.

· Create and manage proposal timelines and evaluation overviews of new business development opportunities including attending info sessions/calls, creating overview documents for senior team evaluation, creating proposal development work plans which ensure adherence to IRC’s business development standards, and help to schedule meetings or calls to ensure appropriate inputs from key stakeholders throughout the process.

· Write and submit letters of inquiry, concept papers and grant proposals to federal, state, and city/county government agencies as well as private foundations and corporate donors.

· Research or provide general background information, and compile attachments as needed, often working with finance or HQ counterparts.

· Maintain understanding of IRC policies and procedures for grants preparation, review and submission, including use of the IRC grants management database and opportunity tracking system.

- Manage a library of supporting documents in readiness to submit to prospective funders in the grant writing process.

· Assist in translating IRC-format budgets to donor templates as requested.

· Maintain accurate and detailed electronic contract and grant files for each funded program with consistent documentation standards.

· Be a local subject expert for IRC’s Business Development Standards.

· Be a local subject expert for IRC’s internal grants systems (PEERS and OTIS).

Grant Administration (20% of time):

· Assist in facilitating grants opening meetings and initiating hard copy and electronic files for all new funding sources.

· Be a back up to the Development Administrator and their duties with grant administration.

· Participate in development team meetings, weekly staff meetings, and national skills building trainings, calls, and communities of practice.

- Comply with all policies, procedures, and protocols of the agency. - Other duties as assigned.

· Deliver quality products against a tight schedule.

· Support the other NorCal offices with grants management tasks when needed to ensure coverage.

KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Position Reports to: Development Manager

Indirect Reporting:

- *Internal*****: Development Team, Program Leads; Operations team; Finance team; Site Director Spokane; HQ Awards Management Unit. - ***External*****:** Donors.

Job Requirements:

Education / Work Experience:

· Undergraduate degree in journalism, English or a related field or comparable work experience. Certification or continuing education in grant writing, proposal development and/or fundraising a strong plus.

· At least three years of professional experience in grant writing/fundraising preferred. Strong writing skills and strong project management skills are both essential to this role.

· Excellent writing, research, and organizational skills.

Demonstrated Skills & Competencies:

· Demonstrated record of developing successful grant proposals to both governmental agencies and private foundations

· Ability to work autonomously in their scheduling and prioritizing within tight deadlines with focus on the work product and a high attention to detail.

· Self-directed but with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well within a team.

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, Outlook.

· Fluency in written and spoken English.

· Project management experience/certification a plus.

· Ongoing commitment to anti-racism

· Experience developing organizational systems and processes

Working Environment:

· A combination of standard office environment, remote work, and ‘field’ time within the service delivery area to perform the above outlined. May require occasional weekend and/or evening work.

· Must have a valid driver’s license with legally required insurance. Position will require using own transportation within service delivery area. Mileage reimbursement where applicable.
