Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women Senegal Program would like to give an opportunity to a political study, development studies, politics, gender/women studies or other similar subject at the university level Student or recent graduate to have a learning experience within its Senegal Program Presence’s Governance and Political Participation Unit. The internship will initially be issued for a period of three months and subject to performance may be extended for a further three months. The purpose of the internships is to give students the opportunity to have a first-hand experience for them to build their capacity as part of their studies and to also contribute to the work of UN Women.

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Governance Women Leadership Political Participation NPO, the Governance Women Leadership Political Participation intern will have the opportunity to learn how to provide support that ensures high quality, accuracy and consistency of work.

The Governance Women Leadership Political Participation intern will be exposed to and will be taught on how to apply the knowledge they attain to execute tasks assigned to them in full compliance with UN Women policies and strategies. He/She will also have an opportunity to work in close collaboration with the staff in the CO to learn, exchange information and ensure consistent service delivery.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the WLPP NPO, the intern shall perform, inter alia, the following tasks:

  • Support the office in implementation and monitoring of projects activities related to Governance Women Leadership and Political Participation, (e.g., preparation of trainings, workshops, awareness-raising, meetings or advocacy actions, and in organizing related events/activities, drafting termes of reference letters, web articles, meeting minutes or any other related document

  • Support UN Women office in resource mobilization related to Governance Women Leadership and Political Participation by developing concept notes to share with potential donors

  • Provide administrative support to the office in the use of UN-WOMEN's online tools to ensure proper monitoring of projects and activities of the Governance Women Leadership and Political Participation component

  • Assist UN Women staff in various admin tasks

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: political studies, development studies, politics, gender/women studies or other relevant subjects is required.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation, or Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in French and English are required.
  • Working knowledge another UN language is an advantage.

Remuneration:

Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
