Description of task

The objective of this assignment Governance and Justice Coordination Officer (International UN Volunteer) is to support the UN Resident Coordinator (UNRC) and the UNCT in the area of governance, justice and human rights, as well as the UN Results Group on Governance and Justice. The Coordination Officer will also contribute to the implementation of the OSP 2017-2021 and of the UNSDCF 2022-2026, advancing the UN’s Delivering as One (DaO) agenda especially in the context of the United Nations development system reform, and enhancing synergies and impacts of UN support in the area of governance and justice.

Under the overall guidance of the UNRC, through the direct supervision of the Head of the UNRCO, the Coordination Officer will perform the following functions:

  • Support the UNRC and the UNCT, as well as the Results Group on Governance and Justice (RGGJ), in integrating governance and justice into their programmes and activities, in particular the One Strategic Plan;
  • Support the UNRC and the UNCT to build and strengthen national capacities and institutions for governance and justice, based on an assessment of the national context, capacities and priorities and facilitate access to specific expertise, including by drawing from available resources and tools;
  • Support the UNRC and the UNCT in promoting governance and justice, and upholding international norms and standards through advocacy, awareness-raising and legal analysis;
  • Support the UNRC and UNCT and national partners in their engagement to implement recommendations from such international mechanisms as the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council, as well as those under relevant international instruments of specialized agencies;
  • Upon request, and under the direct supervision and guidance of the UNRC, contribute to training and technical assistance to the Government and other national stakeholders with a view to strengthening national capacity for governance and justice;
  • Provide Secretariat support for the UNCT Human Rights Thematic Group (HRTG);

  • Support to the Informal Development Partners Group on Human Rights including the organization of meetings, topics for discussion, consolidation and coordination of updates, and follow up to meetings;

  • Act as UNRCO focal point on disability inclusion, including supporting UNRC and UNCT activities in relation to disability inclusion;
  • Act as UNRCO focal point on issues relating to lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex persons, including coordinating a national UN Free & Equal Campaign;
  • Support to the organization and coordination of UN Country Team meetings;
  • Support the development of the 2022-2026 UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework;
  • Work in partnership with UN colleagues to ensure successful programme development and implementation to achieve the One Strategic Plan results;
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Educational additional comments

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent in governance and justice or related fields.

Experience remark

  • At least two years of experience in program/project development, and monitoring and evaluation, preferably in a developing country and/or in the Asian region;
  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience in governance and justice.

Language skills

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent

  • Good knowledge and understanding of governance and justice issues;
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in an international environment;
  • Fluency in English is required.
