The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

This UNV assignment is intended to support the UNEP One Health Team in the Biodiversity and Land Branch in the Ecosystems Division to strengthen its capacity and expertise to engage in One Health processes at the global and regional levels. In March 2022, UNEP formally joined the Quadripartite One Health Alliance, formerly known as the Tripartite Collaboration for One Health, alongside the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH). UNEP specifically aims to strengthen the environmental dimensions of human and animal health and contribute to the joint objectives of the expanded One Health Alliance and the implementation plan for the One Health Joint Plan of Action, which was developed by the four partner organizations. In 2023, UNEP is expected to become the chair of the Quadripartite Secretariat.

Under the direct supervision of Programme Management Officer, contribute to UNEP’s role as the Chair of Secretariat, including by organizing and servicing meetings of the Quadripartite Joint Secretariat, the Senior Management Team meetings and the Annual Executives meetings. The UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Participate in and contribute to the coordination and implementation of global and regional Quadripartite activities. • Contribute to the coordination of One Health Activities across UNEP, including by organizing and servicing meetings of the inter-Divisional UNEP One Health Working Group.
• Contribute to One Health agenda setting and propose, advise on and review approaches and specific studies relevant to the development of a global approach to reduce environmental aspects of risk, including risk of zoonotic pandemics, pollution and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
• Contribute to the preparation of various written outputs for UNEP and the Quadripartite, e.g., draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, strategic documents, guidelines and policy recommendations etc. • Work with donors and key partners to facilitate the development, resource mobilization, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes /projects related to One Health.
• Contribute to the preparation of funding proposals and project concept notes.
• Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighboring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
