Background

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. WFP works closely with the Government of Indonesia and provides technical support to better understand the situation of food security and nutrition across the country. The use of geospatial technologies is critical to generate data and analysis to identify the risk of exposure and vulnerable areas. These analytics helps government partners to make informed decisions on programme planning, intervention, and data-driven policy making.

Key responsibilities:

The GIS Associate reporting to Earth Observation and Climate Analyst, under the overall guidance of the Head of the Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit, will provide technical support to the climate, food security and nutrition analysis portfolio. The GIS Associate is expected to have the necessary technical skills and knowledge to enhance WFPs technical assistance to the Government of Indonesia for remote sensing, mapping, and data analysis. The scope of work includes routine data collection and analysis from various satellite imageries, provide mapping supports, and liaise with government partners for preparing joint products and publications. The GIS Associate will:

  1. Conduct spatial data analysis on climate, food security and nutrition, data collection, and map production according to cartographic standards, and prepare a range of reports as required.
  2. Organize and cooperate with the Earth Observation and Climate Analyst to facilitate technical work group meetings for completion of seasonal bulletins.
  3. Develop spatial data infrastructure and manage regular data collection for quantitative data analysis in line with WFP corporate standards to support climate and food security monitoring at national level.
  4. Support through provision of technical inputs the further enhancement of the Platform for Real-time Impact and Situation Monitoring (PRISM), including integration of new datasets.
  5. Engage and collaborate closely with government partners to provide technical assistance towards strengthening capacity on food security and nutrition, climate change vulnerability and risk analysis.
  6. Develop and finalize, in cooperation with the Earth Observation and Climate Analyst training modules and training workshops for PRISM and GIS, targeting Government users of related technologies.
  7. Conduct remote sensing analysis and create data visualisation products (e.g., maps, charts, infographics) to provide insights and findings for non-technical audiences.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications and experience

  1. University degree in geography, GIS, remote sensing, computer science, or related subject with minimum 3 years of relevant working experience.
  2. General knowledge of climate change, food security, forestry, disaster risk management, vulnerability, and government policies.
  3. Experience in engaging with government partners.
  4. Excellent verbal and written proficiency in English and Bahasa Indonesia.

Technical competencies

  1. Advanced skills and proficiency of ESRI ArcGIS or open-source GIS software and familiarity with a wide range of spatial data formats.
  2. Practical knowledge and experience in operating cloud-based geospatial analysis environment (Google Earth Engine, AWS).
  3. Experience in developing web-based application for geospatial data processing and visualisations.
  4. Experience with data management including organizing and maintaining complex projects containing geospatial and tabular data.
  5. Strong statistical and analytical skills. Proficiency in using SQL, R, or Phyton is desirable.
  6. Experience in using UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) for data acquisition, processing, and analysis is a plus.
