Organizational Setting

FAO Afghanistan is investing, across all 34 provinces, in resilience reinforcing actions that focus on protecting agriculture livelihoods and local ecosystems, boosting local production of nutritious foods and cash-incomes, and safeguarding critical agriculture sectoral development gains achieved over the past couple of decades through revitalizing rural markets and economy. In 2022-2023, FAO will, under the life-saving assistance Outcome (1) of the UN Transitional Engagement Framework (TEF), focus on the following four priority actions: (i) Safeguarding Wheat Seed Security, (ii) Enhancing Local Production of Nutritious Food, (iii) Livestock Protection and Dairy Sector Support, and (iv) Restoring Irrigation Structures to Boost Cash Incomes. Additionally, FAO will contribute towards resilience building activities under Outcome 2 of the TEF.

Reporting Lines

The GIS and Remote Sensing Specialist will work under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative and the direct and technical supervision of the Head of Water Resource and Irrigation Team.

Technical Focus

The GIS and Remote Sensing Specialist will provide relevant technical assistance for the efficient implementation of Water and Resilience Services.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Carry out data acquisition and analysis.
  • Prepare different layers of digital information.
  • Prepare vector images from the raster images of the maps after digitizing.
  • Carry out command area delineation of the irrigation schemes.
  • Prepare Digital Elevation Model of the map to produce catchment area map of the source and the drainage systems.
  • Establish Management Information System (MIS) for Water Resource and Irrigation related works.
  • Perform any other duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced degree (Masters) or University degree (Bachelor) in computer or Information Systems
  • For advanced degree a minimum of seven (5) years of professional experience in GIS and MIS
  • For university degree minimum of ten (7) years professional experience in GIS and MIS.
  • Working knowledge (level C) of English and the local languages (Pashto and/or Dari);
  • National of Afghanistan.

  • Proven track record of knowledge of GIS and MIS;

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with all stakeholders and to present ideas clearly and effectively
