This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the RCO Team Leader and the RC, the UN Youth Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Provide technical assistance to UNRCO, its partners and civil society to promote and integrate gender equality across their interventions, taking into consideration the Covid-19 context
  • Support the UNCT in adequately and meaningfully mainstreaming gender throughout their respective programmes taking into consideration the Covid-19 context

  • Support the UNCT to develop new (joint) project proposals on gender, as part of the UNCT Covid-19 Response Plan

  • Support the production of a Common Country Assessment with a strong gender component
  • Provide support, as needed, to each UN entity working in Gabon in the area of gender, to advance gender related SDGs
  • Support the implementation of the 1325 Action Plan, on Women, Peace and Security in Gabon
  • Propose gender mainstreaming tools in human rights, social protection and social cohesion activities carried out in the country

  • Mobilize young people and women and ensure their involvement in social cohesion activities in the country

  • Strengthen the capacities of youth associations on the one hand and women, on the other, on civic engagement, participation and human rights
  • Support sensitization and strategic communication on gender related aspects with the media
  • Contributor to the documentation of the results of good practices in the field of gender equality for transformational governance in Gabon
  • Contributor to the implementation of gender accountability frameworks

  • Facilitate research on the integration of gender equality in civil society and propose an action plan

  • Promote resource mobilization for the implementation of gender equality initiatives

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Development studies, Gender equality and women empowerment, Social sciences, Public administration.

Required experience:

Experience remark:

  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) at the national and/or international level in gender and development issues, or other relevant programmes
  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded

Language skills:

  • French(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent

Learning Expectations

Learning and development are a central part of the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment and take place before, during and after his or her assignment in the field. Ideally, offering diverse opportunities for learning and development aim to strengthen the volunteer’s skills and competences, improve the quality of the assignment and keep the volunteer’s motivation high.

Learning elements for the UN Youth Volunteer include the development of:

  • Professional skills: including specific competencies and reflection on assignment-related abilities; and on-the-job skills such as time management, problem solving, team building; and career preparedness such as interview skills, CV preparation, job searching.

  • Interpersonal skills: including communication and listening skills; multi-cultural awareness and cultural competency; and conflict and stress management.

  • Volunteering-related skills: including leadership; civic responsibility; and engagement and active participation.

Beyond the learning opportunities provided by UNV, the host agency will support knowledge and capacity development in the technical areas that are relevant to the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment. The host agency will provide, at its expense, UN Youth Volunteers with equal opportunity to participate in training courses and workshops offered to its personnel.

UN Youth Volunteers should be between 18 and 29 years old throughout the duration of their service.
