Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Logistics, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all peacekeeping and special political missions around the world.

This position is located in the Client Solutions Delivery Section (CSDS) of the Service for Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies Service (SGITT), at the United Nations Global Service Centre in Brindisi, Italy.

The Geospatial Information Assistant is under the general supervision of the Chief Data and Visualization Unit (DVU) or delegated official.

Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Geospatial Information Section or a designated officer, the incumbent will be required to perform two main duties: 1) technical work, such as assisting in preparation of maps and geospatial analysis products and services; collect, process and evaluate geospatial data; archiving mission geospatial data; administration of the GIS web-site; 2) administrative support functions for the Section.

Within limits of delegated authority, the Geospatial Information Assistant will carry out the following duties:

•Assist in the preparation of maps and analytics products to deliver different type of paper maps, web maps and visual products. Also design symbology, icons, templates and other related cartographic and graphic products in support of different geospatial solutions; •Assist in design, develop, maintain (collect, process and evaluate) spatial databases and use spatial data management tools in accordance with established and customized standards. •Upload and archive geospatial products to the content management to maintain the geospatial products catalogues and metadata of the mission. •Assist in the production and maintenance of web-map services, feature services, and graphic products in support of variety of geospatial solutions (dashboards, web and mobile applications); •Printing/plotting out and generate PDF files of mapping production; •Experience of working with vector tile and raster tile technology to Assist production of customized Global maps like terrain and street base maps to use in variety of geospatial solutions. •Drafting and review outreach correspondence and other communications; •Assist in advanced GIS training administrative procedures and coordinate administrative arrangements for official travel and training requests; •Assist in generation of 3D visualization products including terrain maps and human made infrastructures; •Performs Quality Control and Quality Assurance (QC/QA) and assists in SOPs development; •Initiating procurement action for geographic information systems (GIS) equipment, software, supplies and services as well as satellite imagery by raising requisitions, and monitoring expenditures and payment of invoices; •Advising staff on administrative procedures, and maintaining up-to-date office files as well as electronic databases, task management and Agile processes in various systems such or similar as iNeed and Azure DevOps. •Monitoring staff attendance and performing other functions that may be assigned by the Chief Geospatial Information Officer or his/her designated officer.

    Education High school diploma or equivalent is required. Technical Certification in Geospatial Sciences (Cartography, Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or equivalent) which involves geospatial information and image processing programmes is required. A certificate in urban planning, building design, or architecture is desirable.

    Work Experience A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of administrative and geospatial information-related work is required. Experience in GIS, geo-databases, remote sensing, geospatial analysis, maps and web map designing, or a related area is required. Practical experience in ArcGIS-Pro (and extensions), ArcGIS Defense Mapping, Corel Draw, PowerPoint, and PowerBI is required. Experience in request management and Agile processes systems, such or similar to iNeed, and Azure-DevOps, is desirable. Experience producing vector tiles, geospatial dashboards, ArcGIS portal, sharing, and publishing geospatial contents is also desirable.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of another UN language is desirable.

    Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Service category in the United Nations Secretariat. Having passed the Administrative Assessment Support Test (ASAT) in English at Headquarters, ECA, ESCWA, UNOG, UNOV, ICTR, or ICTY may be recognized in place of the GGST, pending confirmation of validity.
